STUPID QUESTION!

   / STUPID QUESTION! #11
I've never changed a fuel filter on either tractor and I check the sight glass all the time and there is nothing in the bottom. I must have good fuel or good luck or I'll attribute it to the Cat additive I use....

I quit using UDT/SUDT a few years back. I use Chevron Synthetic Trans/Hydraulic fluid and interestingly, it's orange. Not cheap either. 150 clams per 5 gallon pail.

The fuel filter on the 5030 is so cheap, I just change it when cleaning was indicated. I have been stranded by clogged fuel filters on gas tractors, trucks, and ATV/UTV and a diesel tractor twice. This hasn't happened in quite some time, but the long walk home up and down some pretty steep hills is enough incentive for me to change per manual or more often; guess we all do that which works for us.

Not even going to get near the oil type discussion as it never seems to end well.

I fully understand the oil and grease thing. My take is if it works well and no problems encountered, then use it.

I just got tired of trying to decipher the level of clear U/SUDT on a shiny metal Kubota dipstick. I knew there was a better way.

If I remember correctly, my Grand L3710 had a sight glass on the rear case, I think it was that one......:confused2:

Kubota should have known better than to polish that dipstick, don't you think?

I just couldn't see clean oil against the polished dipstick and in a moment of inspiration found a better way. I took the dipstick into the kitchen, cleaned it well, wrapped the upper part in a wet towel, and then ran the last 4 inches of the dipstick repeatedly through the stove burner flame until the metal in the measurement area began to passed through straw color and turned a uniformly pretty blue. Surprised me how quick and easy the whole process was. It's been a couple years now and that dipstick is easy to read - not perfect like having a sight glass, but still much better than it was. The blue color is in the metal itself and hasn't changed or worn off at all.
