They will rot and that ground will sink but it will be hard to notice before 15-20 years.

Then it'll be real obvious. They'll regret it later if they build on it now.

Then they'll be able to fill it with water and make a little frog pond out of it.

When they cleared the 2.3 acres next to me, they dug a big hole in the back of the property and put all the stumps in it. I figure 5 years from now they will have a sinkhole and a useless are in that piece of property, all because the owner didn't want to spend the money to haul it off, or get a burn permit which would have required removing a few of my trees to get the required distance from the fire. I pretty much told him we could work out something on my trees, but he took the clearing peoples word that it wouldn't sink and that he could build his son's house back there later. Wake-up call coming one day for him...

I got my SC-25 from the dealer. I think I paid 5K flat. The SC-50 wasn't that much more (That's what I first looked like at the dealer).

It's not too big for the tractor, in fact I may try it on my 2305 if the 05 will lift it.. ;)

It's very smooth and doesn't move the tractor around much at all. The flywheel is very heavy and doesn't chatter much at all. The teeth eat away the stump very fast. If you take too big of a bite or swing too fast you can slow down the engine but you get the hang of it in a few minutes. The swing is much smoother than a BH.

I figure soil conditions and such contribute to the amount of time it takes to decay. I had a stump removed on the edge of my driveway and my FIL pushed it back into the hole and covered it up before I got home. I started to say something, but my wife stopped me, saying he was trying to help, so I left it. She said it wouldn't matter anyway! I have a soft spot in my driveway in that area and that was in 2001 when that happened. Everytime she asks me if I am going to fix that spot, I just smile, knowing she remembers why it is soft.

There is a Woods stump grinder that I enquired about (casually) for a little under $3K. Maybe less machine than the SC25 but for occasional or limited use it could be appropriate.

Yeah that's right. Rot time will also depend on the type of wood.

You are correct sir.

A few years ago I bought some of that stuff. You drill a few good size holes in the stump and shake some of this white powdered stuff into the holes.

Add water and leave them alone for a while.

I did just that and went out a few months later to see if they were rotted out and they weren't. They were still pretty much stuck in the ground same as before.

At that point I thought the stuff didn't work and forgot about them.

These stumps weren't the big ones I had ground down, they were all fairly small. Say ~4-6" in diameter.

Well, after I had the big ones ground down this past summer I walked around the yard and kicked one of the smaller ones I had treated just 3 years ago and it crumbled and came out of the ground roots and all, all dried out.

Then I walked around to all the other ones I had treated and ripped them out of the ground with my bare hands. I felt like Superman.

They were all completely dried out and felt almost as fragile as balsa wood.

So the treatment did work after all, just takes a 2-3 years to work.
