I've been getting calls for awhile bout stump grinding been turning the jobs down due to not having a Stump Grinder. I considering buying one something small enough to walk threw small gates an into back yards. Been looking at a Rayco 1625, wat is the going rate for grinding stumps. I've heard people charge by the square inch, an others by the stump. Wat would be the best why to charge? An how much?

I've had customers in my area tell my they found someone for $50 a stump on a few occasions.

We have a local individual who has a walk behind vermeer grinder and he chargers $50 dollars a stump no matter the size.

Charge what you would be willing to pay per hour or stump.
$50 a stump, forget it, too rich for my blood

If I did that I'd go out of business cause I'm cheap. Sometimes it's hard to believe people pay us what they do.

A fellow I've used twice charged $75 when he came out just to do one stump for me; once nearly 6 years ago and once a couple of years ago. I didn't ask about it, but I noticed he had a different stump grinder the second time.

But a different fellow this past May figured $50 for a stump he ground when he was also pruning some other trees for me.

$4.00 an inch of diameter. He had a remote controled grinder.

I don't own a stump grinder, but $50 per stump seems pretty cheap to me for a few stumps. Would you load up a stump grinder, drive x miles, grind 2 stumps, and drive back for $100.00? Even though it would only take an hour to do the work it would tie up much more time.

But... if you have 10 acres of stumps that's a different story. We can grind them flush for about $5.00 - $10.00 each (depending on height) with the GT25.

I take a shovel and dig a pit around my stumps and burn them out, done 2 big oak stumps this past summer. Cost alittle time and alittle chain saw mix. As for 10 acres, for that I hire a cat with a ripper. No sense it grinding something flush and have a bunch of holes when the stumps rot down in time. Sorry 50 bucks a stump is too much, unless it's only 1 stump maybe. If you can get 50 a stump go for it.

This past spring I had 13 stumps I had to remove. I couldn't get to them with a backhoe so I tried to remove them by hand but that's tough to do. I never even got one out by hand. I found a rental shop that rented a stump grinder for $100. A day so I got it. All my stumps were about 12-16" in dia. The grinder had a 13HP Honda motor on it and from the time I started the project to the time I had them all grinded down it was less than two hours and I took each one down 8" below grade.

My buddy who also needed some stumps grinded took the machine after I used it, did his stumps and we split the cost. We returned the machine that same day and the rental shop only charged us $66. for the rental. The best deal I got all summer.

I'm not planing on doing big jobs with it, i think i will come out better money wise doing smaller jobs. I'm also thinking of charging a minimum of 150.00, no matter if it is one stump. I know where fish is coming from i'm not going to load up one of my machines an go do a job just to break even. As far as the bigger stump grinding jobs if one comes along i'll call up Rayco an get one for the 140 if there's money to be made. Thanks for all the info
