I was wondering if anyone knows how to pick out a hydraulic motor that has enough torque and speed to make a stump grinder. My bobcat only puts out 11gpm. I know I can buy them but I like to make things. Good winter project.

Perhaps you can find out the blade tip velocity from some of the other stump grinders, and the HP required to run them. You can compute rpm, torque, cu in of the hyd motor, but how much of that is getting to the teeth on the stump grinder.

You could start backwards, by using a known bld tip velocity, back that down to the diameter of the disk, then the rpm of the disk, then the cu in of the motor that will give that rpm at max flow, and then the volume, and pressure necessary to operate the system.

The data below is just an example:

Here is a motor that will take about 10 GPM, and turn the disk at about 460 rpm continuously. Torque is about 1070 in lbs.

10 GPM, and 3000 psi, less than 21 HP.
