I would recommend a 8000 LB Warn winch. Mine is 15 years oid and will still pull a fullsize truck with the wheels locked up on my trailer witch is 38 inches off the ground.

great. I see a 500 dollar version on amazon.com right now. 8000lbs doesn't seem overly much to you? Is it/can it be DC to run off tractor?

Good winches aren't cheap, I suspect the one the poster is referring to lists for about $1400 to $1800 today, and is a 12volt winch for truck and auto use. It has a higher speed of pull(feet per minute) on the line than the cheap ones too. These are good for electric winches but pale in comparison to a pto or hydraulic driven large drum winch on heavy equipment.

I would think the battery and alternator on a typical small tractor would have to run the 12v winch intermittently during recovery. These winches can suck a battery down quick, so I would pull a few feet at a time and wait for the alternator and battery to replenish.

Great advice..I am aiming for the 55 alternator upgrade but perhaps i can get a pto driven winch attachment? Or not?

plan on a good deep cycle battery also. reg batteries don't take kindly to large draws of power and being discharged.

With a 55 amp alternator you can probably run it for a minute and let it rest for 4 minutes with engine at a fast idle to keep the charge up. A starting battery works best for this application, the motors on these winches are very similar to starter motors to begin with.

Ironroad 38 is correct about the starting batteries not taking to deep discharges well. But deep cycle batteries do not take well to high current draws either.

You may be better served with an (Oddysey) Platinum DieHard from Sears. these are a compromise between starting and deep cycle batteries. These are the best batteries I know of in their price range. It also being an AGM type battery will not leak and ruin your tractor either. JDeere batteries are often leak prone and fail early in their life.

It has been atleast 15 or 20 years since I fooled with electric winches so I may be out of date but I am guessing under load this winch is drawing 250 amps or better. So give the alternator a chance to keep the battery charged up. It is not necessary to buy the largest battery to run the winch since you are limited by the alternators abiltiy to restore the charge, but I would buy the largest that will fit the tractor as this will help with cold weather starting too. Also be very careful with winch lines they can maim and kill.

When I was referring to pto winches I was referring to truck mounted winches.
