Stubborn Lawn Issue

Calling @Complete Turf Care . It’d be interesting to get a pro’s take on this.
Sorry, but he is in New Jersey which means he has cool season grass.

I'm just not familiar with cool season grasses to give any advice.

I would suggest he contact his local county agent for help.

thanks guys!

dug up and found no grubs.

But I see the possibility of fungus. I keep the sprinklers on overnight, so that was my first change, I get though all the comments, and get through all those ideas!

If you fertilize heavily, then yes, sprinklers overnight will often bring mold. Best to run them early morning, so the lawn has a chance to dry out within a few hours.

Most molds and fungi can be treated, but turf fungicides can be crazy expensive!

I should have added one thing: You'll see a lot of advice to break up your yearly nutrient (fertilizer) requirements into at least 5 applications, usuallly 3 in spring and 2 in fall, and to avoid fertilizer application in the hottest part of the summer. I always suspected this was for this very reason, to avoid promoting mold or fungus that thrives on the fertilizer in hot weather, but I suspect @Complete Turf Care knows more about this than me.

Of course, things we can't do to our cool season turf grasses up here, they do every day in the south. Their grasses behave totally different than ours, and probably have different susceptibilities to stuff like this.
