I always try to use a heli-coil as it means the smallest hole enlargement. Use grease on the drill and tap to catch any chips and blow low pressure air into the fill hole to blow chips out. Is the case aluminum or iron? If iron, you can also use a magnet. Be sure to correctly measure the case thickness so you get the heli-coil length slightly shorter. Careful on breaking off the end tab so you don't lose it inside.

I have an aluminum case that I bought a Heli Coil kit for after reading up on various repair methods. The drain bolt is currently snug enough, but stripped. I'll be making the repair next spring.
Anyway, you mention breaking off the tab, and not dropping it inside. Is there a best practice way to do this? My plan was to not use the included punch and try breaking the tab off with a pair of needle nose pliers.
Any advice appreciated.

Like was mentioned above you could use a time-sert. No tabs to bust off with those. Not quite the thread strength of a helicoil but it going into aluminum on a tractor not a m1 Abrams tank. And they were the TSB repair for the Northstar stripped head bolts. Good enough for a Cadillac head should work for you.

Yes, a nice pair of needle nose pliers that have some room to twist back and forth. Grab the tab, wiggle, remove.
