The FIL hates Spam because other than combat rations it was about the only thing they had to eat, for weeks on end. Usually cold, well as cold as it gets on Guadalcanal. It reminds him of a time he would prefer to not remember. He has never talked about it with his family (all girls). He and I were on a motorcycle camping trip and he did talk about it. I had read a lot about the campaign and considered it to be ****. My understanding was way short of reality. It was a real **** for a 17 year old Marine (any Marine) and I still doubt that I understand completely.
