Stihl Bar studs.

Do you chainsaw repair guys use loc-tite when installing the bar studs in your saws? Recently my threads for the nuts have gotted banged up and I have ordered new studs. Or just screw them in? I have had them come loose in the past.

I always just tighten them by hand, can’t say I have had a issue of a loose bar.

How did you damage the studs? I didn’t think you could with the guard mounted.

Only have ever tightened by hand, but if there is any concern, a good solution is to lightly paint a section of the threads (say about 4 turns) on the new studs with blue Loctite and let it dry a few hours or overnight. Then install. That will give more retention but not actually glue the studs in or contaminate the inner threads with Loctite permanently.

The outer threads were wearing to the point that when I remove the nuts, The studs would come out instead. I thought i'd go with new studs and nuts.

If the studs were unscrewing I'd use some sort of thread locker on the new ones. You don't want them to wear the threads in the cases. Loctite 242 (the typical blue stuff) is fine for this purpose. It's breakaway torque is low enough to not damage aluminium or magnesium cases but high enough to keep the studs in place when removing the bar nuts. I've used 272 medium strength (the common red stuff) on studs in motorcycle engines. 272 will break loose with enough torque but some heat helps. If the 242 doesn't hold the studs in try 272.

Use the blue thread locker but first clean the holes with alcohol, q tips and clean air. Double nut the outer stud threads, (in other words thread them on and tighten them against each other. Then you can tighten the studs into the holes with the wrenches or torque wrench and socket. After you're satisfied with yourself for doing a good job, you can loosen the outer most nut first holding the inner nut with the wrench, then take that nut off. The most important part is no oil or grease on any threads while fixing.
