Very nice work.

But whats with the hogs. Do you have a season on them in Texas? Are they trouble to people

Being from NY I've never seen a wild one.

Like jinman said, their ancestors were domestic hogs that got loose. And now the feral hogs are considered a nuisance so there's no season or restrictions on them. They root and tear up ground that's being farmed, destroy crops, etc. Some people hunt them with dogs, some with rifles, some set traps. I think most of those who set traps, at least, then sell them later. Some of the very upscale restaurants now have feral hog on the menu.

Steph, all I can say is "atta girl, you done GREAT!!!"

Eddie, superb post and superb job in getting Steph educated and set up for her first hog.

It doesn't get any better than this!

Eddie, I was telling Kathy about Steph's hog-shot and she wanted me to ask you if hog hunting will be an added feature of your RV park & campground? She said she's glad you have the hogs in your back yard instead of here in our garden. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif What kind of fence would it take to keep hogs out of a garden? Electric? There are lots of hogs here, but they tend to stay along the creek bottoms. Thank goodness! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Eddie,

We were at the main flea market on Friday and the one called the Mountain on Saturday. I have never been to such a huge flea market in my life!
Those little stores up on the Mountain look like they came out of a story book.
We really enjoyed being there. We try to go down to Texas every year during spring break and visit different areas. We are hoping that our spring break in 2007 falls on the same date as the Canton Flea Market.
Good luck and keep us posted on Steph's hunting adventures. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jinman,

That sounds like a great idea. Since I think I am one of Eddie's closest neighbors, all could come to my place and help me with my hogs.

We have had a garden every year and have not had any issues with the hogs (yet, knock on wood). I watched a group of hogs similar to the size in Eddie's picture walk and squeeze right through my electric fence several times. At first it deterred them and they ran the other way, but once they knew it was there I guess they were not bothered by a little shock therapy.

I think it the electric option may work, but if they were like the hogs on my place, they would come back later and have a garden feast. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Eddie- That looks about like the size of the herd? of pigs I have on my place. I really did not think they travelled in such large numbers.

Congratulations, Steph.

We were walking our back pasture (just before sunset) a couple of weeks back, and saw a heard of about 18. All sizes. We had no camera, so just watched for a while. I thought I'd try something. (I'll digress a moment: We have a guy in the area who hunts with dogs, so there may be some conditioning regarding the rest of my story.) I start baying like a pack of dogs (quite convincingly, I think). Mrs Jazz thinks I've gone loco, but you should have seen those hogs take off! I'd stop my barking, and they'd stop running. (Yes, country entertainment at its finest.)
I guess my point is, if you just want the hogs chased out of the campground, I'm for hire.

Eddie, tell Steph to send me a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. Some sausage and eggs will do in a pinch. (I like ham and eggs too) I can't imagine having a herd of hogs running around doing whatever hogs feels like doing. Do they get hit by vehicles on the roads? I've heard that a hog can flip a car. Some of them are huge.

( I have no idea of the damage to the cars or what it's like to hit one, but would think it's less than a deer since they are so low to the ground and the bumpers would probably take most of the impact. )

Eddie, I've never personally seen the results of a pig/car accident, but I've always heard that because they're so solid and low, they roll under a car causing you to lose control and maybe flip the vehicle. In other words, I've heard that they're about the worst thing you could hit, but have no personal knowledge.

Eddie you are lucky she got the fever or she would have never seen the reason we hunt.
You are both lucky /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have seen a run over hog in Dallas area on 20 between Grand Praire and Duncanville and too many to count on 46 between Bandera and Boerne in the early 80's.
The most gruesome one was in 16 north of Fredricksburg, it looked to be about a 400 pounder hit by a big truck.
