So last week I was wrestling more and more over the space of 5 minutes with the steering wheel of the 6500 so I could finish off some important work, when suddenly no response at all. The steering oil level was fine, the tractor 300 hours and 5 years old.

My friend and I crack the steering pump and the hydraulic pump that runs it. The female connector cylinder socket (which matches up the male splines from both pumps) is stripped bare on the steering pump side! Please see attached photo (22mm long by 22mm dia or 7/8")

Has anyone ever seen this happen? The Australian dealer here says he's never seen the part before when I showed it to him and recommended buying a new pump for a $1,000! The part can be machined for $200.

Would welcome any suggestions/comments, thanks in advance.

I would be concerned about where all the metal shavings went and what they are eating up now. Luckily the two systems are separate. Did you look at Mahindra parts online to see if you can get that part?

Thanks Rusty, we shared the same concern but we have found there were no metal shavings around, just what looked like graphite around the pump parts. :confused2:

My mate thought that the part might not have been heat treated properly. Is there an online parts list for the Mahindra 6500?

Thanks again.

So where is this part from? inside the hydraulic pump?

can you take some more pics?

having not seen a 6500, more pics might help us. also it is a 2wd or 4wd 6500?

It's a 6500 4wd, the part in question couples the two shafts in the hydraulic tandem pump, the front end is the hydraulic pump which is driven by the engine belt and the pump back end drives the steering pump. The two splined shafts from each pump are coupled with this part which has been sheared inside the steering pump end.

The 2wd 00 series is here, doesn't look like the 6500 4wd is sold now in Australia, is it the same in the US?

Not sure if I'll be giving one just yet, this is the 2nd fault I've had that has debilitated the tractor.

The parts lists I find only list the hydraulic tandem pump as a whole assembly. So it lists no internal parts. here they are about $330 for the pump.

Are there any make/model/serial numbers on your pump? If it has that you may be able to source the part from the pump manufacturer or maybe a hydraulic shop could help you.

Thanks Tex, here in the lucky country, the pump is A$1100 and A$200 to machine the defective part. As the tractor has only experienced low hours I am now waiting on Mahindra to consider the case for replacement after writing to the dealer direct to express my disappointment.
The tandem pump end plate steering side has "E:7.N" and the number 931133
And on the side of the pump
GD5-18-869FTR-20-IN20
004-J-06
Does anyone recognise the company represented by the abbreviations "E:7.N"?
Thanks again for all your help.
