Steel prices - Yikes!

This is too funny. Plenty of people here have been moaning about purchasing things from China and now when the steel is made here in the USA the price goes high (AS EXPECTED) and now people are moaning that the price is too high.
You can't have it both ways people. You can't BUY AMERICAN, and BUY CHEAP. Take you pick one or the other. We pay workers union wages up to $75.00 and hour including all the benefits, taxes,fees,insurance,regulations etc. and China pays their workers a couple of bucks and hours with no benefits and no government regulations, and fees.
Personally it's worth paying more to stop the world from taking advantage of us. trump is the only president with the huevos to stand up to the entire world all past presidenst didn't want to make waves so let the world rob us blind.

And that's what's wrong. That drives inflation and drives buyers out of the market which causes sales to drop which causes layoffs and businesses to close.

I've already cut back on some projects and will cut back on more if the problem continues to encroach on my limited income. I may not be able to fix my leaking roof with metal this spring like I've been planning. I may only be able to do part of it, or have to switch to other materials.

How are the steel prices for everyone recently? I just picked up a few sticks of flat bar, angle, and tube. Price came out as just under $0.70/lb out the door. I was expecting higher prices so it was a pleasant surprise.

I don't buy much steel stock but i do pay attention to that industry and will say that many steel mills and mines are shut down. Boat traffic on the lakes has really slowed down......

That's closer to what I expected to pay. I think that's a approximately 20% more or so, compared to what I paid. That's a great list!

Prices via an actual quote at my regular steel supplier are typically lower ... but it serves as a decent reference to get one in the ballpark ...

We have a new welding/metal supply that is sporting some pretty good prices and service.

I just bought:

32.5' of 1-1/4" 11 gauge square tube for $45.83
24' of 1" 11 gauge square tube for $24
2 sheets of 3/4" #9 expanded metal for $116
24' of 2"x2"x1/4" angle for 49.68

The guy cut it all to my specs at no charge so all I have to do is weld and debur.

You can double the prices for the sheet steel and still not be as high as they cost locally, here in central Texas. The other prices are closer, but still 5% to 10% lower than local prices.

This is what really pisses me off! Especially when I know more than they do.

The guy I dealt with yesterday was awesome. Didn't flinch a bit when I asked prices on different materials and cut it all to the inch for me at no charge. I had gone back and forth with him on Facebook messenger several times before I finally went to buy. His attitude was it was his job to answer questions and give the customer what they need. Needless to say when I need more metal or consumables I will be back at his place of business.

The place I had been using had minimum lengths they would sell and 4 out of 5 times I went there they were unfriendly. The very first time I used them the person on duty was extra friendly and helpful. Never saw him again on subsequent visits. This new place is a one man show so I am confident the service will be consistent.
