Dumb question on starting a Deere 4610

My operator's manual isn't real clear about this. The tractor has a Yanmar diesel in it. I know glow plugs are supposed to be warmed up before attempting to start. The warm function on this ignition is to push the key in.

My questions are: (1)How long should I hold the key in "warming"? Does the indicator light go out when the plugs are sufficiently warm? I've never held it long enough to know, because I was afraid of burning something out. (2) should I hold the key pushed in "warming" while turning, to start the engine?

Thanks
Kurt

I don't warm the element when it is warm weather, and only about 10 sec. max when it is near zero F.
My warming light does not go out when "warm enough". Whether you hold the key pushed in while turning to start the engine, is up to you. Other than more drain on the battery, should do no additional harm.
After 17 years, my 4300 with Yanmar starts quickly every time (except when the first battery needed replacement).

There are no dumb questions.. ;)

I heartily agree with beenthere and that goes double for "There are no dumb questions".

I live in a part of the world where "glow plug warming" isn't required due to ambient temperatures. I do turn the key to the on position, listen for the clicking of the fuel pump... perhaps a count of '3', and then advance the key to the start position... releasing it when my Yanmar comes to life.

A bit of reverse procedure for shutting down; I bring the revs all the way down, set the parking brake and then put it into neutral. Then I'll lower the FEL & 3PT hitch down to almost where I want them to rest. And then I'll turn the key to "Off". This allows the donk time to idle enough prior to shutting down.

I then hop off the tractor, chock under my FEL and anything attached to the 3PT, and lower both the rest of the way... bleeding off the pressure.

And to keep things straight, there are no glow plugs per se ... but instead an intake manifold heating element, I believe.
