Here are a few motor oil 101 articles. In chapter three it comments about oil in a standard sealed oil container sitting on the shelf in northern Michigan breaking down after a few winters. Motor Oil 101 - Bob is the Oil Guy
Motor Oil Grades and Service Ratings

I could not find any article about spark/compression lettering that someone mentioned. That is what started me off on a 1/5 hour rabbit hole.

Heading out to buy the full synthetic and a Kubota oil filter..thanks. 3 air filter questions: -Spoke to Kubota parts guy yesterday and he told me I could clean and wash my outer air filter. The one that came on this tractor is very dirty! Am I wrong in wanting to buy a new air filter rather than wash this old one? I can't see how the dislodged dirt won't end up on the inside of the filter-bad news. -He also said that his customers say that they spray the outside of the paper filter with wd-40...good of bad idea?? Wondering if I can mist the paper filter with the K&N air filter oil that I use on my auto filters? -Does K&N make filters for Kubota tractors..seems like the way to go?

He sounds like he has no clue! He needs to stop watching power block tv!! DO NOT put a K&N on your tractor, unless you are prepared for an overhaul!!

K&N does make an external filter for the b7800.

Not a good idea to use this filter on a diesel engine?

Stick with the OEM air filter, unless you are prepared to dust your engine out.

As for oil filters, the K&N is made by Champion labs Which is now owned by fram, things are really loking up for fram. You may just pay extra for the name and nut on the end, not sure on prices where you are.

For my car the air filter has the capacity to work with an engine making 2-3 times more horsepower. Translated I would gain nothing using a K&N. I have purchased them for some of my older vehicles years ago. Not enamored with them anymore. Not sure about my truck. But the K&N does not filter as well and has on occasion clogged up mass air flow sensors. Some claim that a person over oiled the filter and that is why the MAF fouled. In my mind the OEM air filter is more than adequate in all of my engines. But some people have itchy fingers and want to purchase. If you really use your tractor and it is not a toy, there is a fair chance it is operated in dusty environments where you want the best filtration which is probably OEM.

The W in 5W-40 motor oil stands for Winter and indicates the oil meets or exceeds certain criteria for good low-temperature performance. Motor oil with SAE viscosity grade 5W-40 behaves like an SAE 40 oil at high temperatures and SAE 5W oil at low temperatures, providing the necessary fluidity for rapid starts and efficient engine operation at low temperatures.

An oils cold-temperature performance refers to its ability to flow when the engine is cold, or below typical operating temperature (212 F / 100 C), and not simply to what feels cold to humans - warm summer days are also cold to an engine. Startup lubrication is directly affected by a lubricants cold-flow ability, and the impact is felt at higher temperatures than most consumers would think.

Which makes running 5W40 year round a great choice.

I'd stop over thinking the air filter thing and just REPLACE them both with either OEM or equivalent name brand. Buy the 5w-40 full synthetic and a new oil filter. Forget what the Kubota PARTS guy says, listen to us, not some guy who knows nothing, or possibly less about engines.
