Before a few years ago the only stars I saw on buildings were the kind Cliff mentions - cast iron ones that held a nut and rod, intended to tie up the wood framing to the brick walls on masonry buildings. The 170 year old warehouses on Dock Street in Brooklyn come to mind. Then everyone here started putting decorative ones on houses, barns, etc.

I used to buy mine from King Architectural Metals when I was doing building restoration work. Turns out they have some made specifically for you Texas boys:
