Spreader Spreader from TSC=Satisfied

Picked up a 3 point fertilizer/seed spreader from TSC yesterday for $421.00 with tax. It was made in Italy, huh!?! Well I used it for a little fertilizer and pasture seed today. I guess I'd have to say I'm satisfied so far. Here's a pic of the spreader on the Kubota and the tractor model. LOL, don't tell her I said that, notice she's wearing gloves, she works harder than I do usually.

I'm still thinking about a 3 point plug aerator for my clay soil pasture. I did a soil test and I'm good on the PH but basically have NO N, P, or K at all. The clay gets as hard as a rock in the summer and the roots have a heck of a time establishing themselves. Does anyone have experience with plug aerators in clay?

I found it a little humorous that you said <font color="blue"> It was made in Italy, huh!?! </font> because some of the best implements such as tillers, finish mowers, PTO shafts etc. are made in Italy.
If I had a lot of clay soil, I'd be constantly adding all types of compost to the soil and some sand to get the top soil to drain a little better. Of course, this needed to be done before you seeded. Tilling in compost can really go a long way to giving you a more forgiving soil. Here in my town, we can go to several locations for free compost from the City's yard waste program.
Adding this on a regular basis will change the nature of your pasture and give you a better result.
That's a nice looking spreader, and I've seen them in lots of places. John

I'm just about to buy the same spreader for my Yanmar. A few questions if you don't mind, what kind of a pattern does it throw?? Is there some sort of adjustment to control the pattern and rate?? Have some pasture to seed and thought we might kill two birds with one stone with this spreader. First the seed, and once or twice a year what ever chems we need to keep it up. I notice they sell 2 sizes of these, one that is rated at 500 lbs, and one that is rated at 750, which one did you buy, looks like the 500?? I have the same problem, wife with a horse, soon to be another, and a other critters. Looks like you are doing a little better than I have up to now, at least yours has gloves on!!!

My fiance is from Kentucky.. her father use to raise horses.. so I know she's wanted one since she moved to the farm. I've entertained the idea of getting her one.. but I know zero about horses.. and I'm pretty sure I'll end up having to take care of it.

Where do you plan on getting your seed/fert from?
I'm lucky enough that a broadcast spreader is one item that you can rent around here. I bought some fertilizer from the local co-op and they let me use a spreader for $5, which they then waived.
I'm even luckier because they built a new place over the winter about a mile from me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Now I won't have to hook up the trailer. I'll just put the fertilizer in the bucket and/or spreader and attach the spreader to the 3ph /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yes this one is the 500lb model. As far as a pattern it basically throws a 180 degree arc and yes the rate is adjustable. There is a chart on the spreader that gives you a pretty good idea of rate per acre at a given mph.

My wife really pitched in again today as she always does. We're clearing a path through some woods so the horses can get to the new pasture and she clears the brush and tree tops as I fell the trees and cut them up. Those locust trees with the huge thorns can really be a pain in the you know what.

Ken, yes the back of the spreader is a little flatter than the rest. I can't really tell if that is the design or a shipping problem. Either way, it works just fine.

I think it got 'tweaked' in shipping. I have used the same spreader for the past 3 (4 maybe?) seasons to spread clover and milo and the like. I plan to use it for bermuda this year if everything works out right. It gets a little hard to adjust on small grass and legume seed. Works pretty good with peas and soybeans. If you run any fertilizer through it, make SURE you clean it out GOOD. You probably already know this, but nothing is as hard on metal as fertilizer. Especially if you let a lot of ammonia nitrate build up on the thing. I don't run fert through mine at all. I let the local Feed & Seed place do that with their Stainless Bed spreader trucks.

How do you know how fast you are going to get the correct spread? I have a hydrostatic drive, and no MPH indicator.

The co-op told me that travelling 88 ft in 15 seconds is about 4mph. That was for the stuff I put down and it seemed to work well with the way the spreader was adjusted.
