Speedy Highway Construction

Time will tell... Especially on the areas that was a deeper compacted fill over a culvert, or up agaisnt a bridge backwall. It may show up immediatley, or 5-10 years down the road, but it will show. Almost bet they are working 24-7 to move that much dirt..!!

LUV running those scrapers..!!

They finished it in July. They had 17 months only took them 10.

Were they within budget on the completion? When projects finish early, it's normally associated with also being under budget too. These contractors really deserve their bonuses/incentives when that happens.

Do you have a link to any of the finished project photos? Is the road surface concrete or asphalt?

Whoever figures the time strutcher out should never do it again. Hope the bridges don't fall down.

Here's another article with a photo. I'd bet Toyota isn't too crazy about this photo because the white car pictured is a Honda, I think.

Another photo I found:

Of course one thing to take into account is that the labor market in this neck of the woods had TANKED, it was up around 11%. Workers were probably easy to find.

And cheap too.

At 11%, I'd bet alot of them were quite hungry.

I think the contractor said that they had everything in place as far as materials too. They didn't have go through a buying/delivery cycle. I'm also certain that the geography of the area had a lot to do with speed. The same stretch of highway in West Va. or the Ozarks in Arkansas would have been much slower because of the huge amount of excavation.

One thing they are doing in Texas now is build an asphalt road first and then put concrete on top of it. The old roads here were built with concrete right on top of the compacted ground after treating with lime. I can remember working for the Texas Highway Dept in the summer and measuring the concrete slab at exactly 9" think. We thought that was very thick, but many of those roads heaved and moved from the clay soil under the base. Now they do much more excavation and fill with road base materials followed by asphalt that looks like a very nice highway. But, they immediately come back and pour a concrete slab that looks to be at least 12" thick on top and continuous with expansion relief cuts made in the top surface. These roads seem to stay flat longer and have much less maintenance. Now there are many state highways and farm to market roads in Texas that are asphalt and extremely nice flat surfaces that don't "sing" as you drive across them like much of the grooved concrete.
