You’re going to want to use a hand impact and hammer to loosen them.. they are EXTREMELY TIGHT..

I had to remove a rounded off 4 sided plug from a water line that was inside a wall. Usually a six sided 5/8's socket works, but the edges of the brass where rounded off.

I found this at Lowes, and it worked great!!!!!

Folks always fear the back-out tool, but I've used more of them on more plumbing than probably anyone you'll ever meet, excepting pro plumbers, and found they always work very well. Part of that is that you're usually using the largest tool in the kit, when it comes to extracting a plug or snapped-off NPT stub.

It often requires grinding the end of the extraction tool down a good bit, as their length is usually sufficient to bottom out in any tee or elbow, from which you might be extracting a plug or thread boss.

Just a few weeks back, I accidentally kicked my pressure switch off the expansion tank tee, while doing some core drilling work on a stone wall in the corner of the boiler room where the well hardware sits. Always exciting, when the pressure switch suddenly loses pressure, and the well pump turns on, creating a geyser in your basement that's spraying 10 GPM right onto the 240V pressure switch that's now hanging from its wiring.

Extraction tool easily removed the broken nipple's thread stub from the tee, and grabbing another 1/4" x 3" nipple off the shelf, I had the whole repair completed in probably 15-20 minutes.
