Some people should stay in town!

I have both motion detectors and sodium vapor lights.
The detectors are always on but I turn on the sodium vapors only when I need them for outdoor activities.

Not much crime around here. If/when there is, it's normally teenager mischief. We've found the best detraction to be to make noise once in awhile. Something about the noise of semi-auto rifles discharging at high rates of fire echoing through the valley sends a statement. Around me, things have happened but never at my place. Heck, they even avoid my mailbox on their drive-by's with baseball bats.

( The lights do attract a ton of bugs to your grass and property though, way more than any predators could possibly eat. )

Quite possibly, I'm not an entomologist, but I figure it gives the insects that are already there a place to hang out, which in turn give the bats a good hunting ground. Most predators are opportunistic and are going to go where they are likely to have an abundance of food.
I don't have one of those bug zappers, but I bet they kill more bugs than what they attract from other areas...

I've always heard the bug zappers attract bugs from a large area which is why everybody that has wanted one has always bought it as a gift for their neighbor. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Being brought up on a farm and transplanted to the city and now relocated back to the rural life, I have only the following statement, before I would move back to the urban life, I would live in a tent. I will say that even in the city you have good neighbors and the neighbors that you only hope will be transferred. The one thing that we all have to make sure of is that WE are good neighbors.

I have to say I don't like the lights on all night neighbors either. I have quite a few around, though not right up on top of me. Maybe starting at around 700 or so feet away. In many cases these people are transplants and just aren't used to and don't like it dark. To me, leaving on lights all night is just another form of pollution.

That being said, I have no problem with lights on a timer or motion detection system.

I talked to a neighbor a couple weeks ago who mentioned that his wife wanted him to install some lights on poles the length of their drive so she could see driving in. I cringed at that idea, myself, so I suggested he put something on a remote so she could hit a button on her keychain and just light them up when she feels she needs them. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm hoping he can sell his wife on that plan now. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have lived in the country all my life and love our security light thats been on since about 1980 and have several friends that love theirs as well. most lights in the house stay on 24 hours a day.
