shvl73,

Check you local and state laws. I would bet they are on the Internet. In NC the owner of the dog/livestock is responsible for damage caused by their animals. One place I owned a lot had a problem with a neighbor who raised sheep. The moron would not keep them fenced in and they would eat other peoples landscaping. I can remember if my neighbor caught one of the sheep and had it impounded or not. I know this is part of NC law. But the county did send the owner some nasygrams about the situation. I know the sheep got fenced in and I think he paid for damage.

Later,
Dan

birdhunter1, all i can say is the more ya tell of this story the more it makes you look like being a jerk

We've all done things in the past which could have been done differently. This is no exception to that rule. Age makes you wise by default.

I'd say I'm more of a smart*** than a jerk. Anyway I did check into it thoroughly about what I could do for a dog chasing deer since that was my original beef with the critter. When I asked a local DNR officer his exact words were "you want me to tell you can shoot it but you can't, but if it is chasing your livestock you can shoot it dead in its tracks and nobody can do anything about it." Yes he did say your livestock, but when I asked if it was someones elses cattle he said "if you work for them then the law applies there as well." Can't really get any more legal than that. As far as not telling her, yeah I probably should have, but after this many years do you expect me to go up and say "look, 5 years ago when....."
Another funny story today, I was cutting back some tree limbs growing in a fence line, too low to get a tractor within 30' of the fence and it was along the fence of all the problems and guess who came to pay me a visit. Flying off the handle about cutting on her trees, true the actual tree was on her property but the limbs I was cutting off were on ours by a long shot and were a long time nuisance. I was diplomatic this time and quit for the day, I was getting hungry anyway and it was raining. I think I'll go back tomorrow at about 4 a.m., nothing like getting started on a hard days work early. LOL

Bob,

I have actually looked at property in Palmyra, IN close to where I live. The area around the place was zoned ag, and part of the sales process was an understanding, documented and signed, that I understood this BEFORE buying.

Peasant fits a lot better than rich #$%@^.

The desire to smack the daylights out of a person like this is not as strong as the desire to not get your hands dirty doing it.

I would have had to drive the tractor to my new shooting place, bring the dogs, and set up camp for a day of dogging, shooting, running the tractor, then a camp fire........

Where I live just about everybody that lives on a rural road has a dusk to dawn area light. I never realized so many people were opposed to them, unless it's a geographic location thing. A motion sensor light might alert you, but a light on all the time is more likely to keep mischief away in the first place.
They make it easy for the bats to keep the insect population down, too.

Huh? Bats don't need light to hunt - they're purpose made for hunting in the dark. The lights do attract a ton of bugs to your grass and property though, way more than any predators could possibly eat.

Funny you should mention that. We have all kind of bugs and spiders living at the back of the house from our security light. I have to power wash the back of the house 2 or 3 times year vs. 1 for the rest. It is funny to watch the "city dwellers" (even though I am a city boy /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) dug and run for cover when you tell them the bats are eating supper.

When I'm finished with the garage I might consider changing the light out for something else, but right now I'm pretty happy with the way it lights up the back of our house, sheds, and the unsecured garage. One thing on these lights, thieves must not like them. A couple of years ago we came home one night and the light wasn't on. Didn't think a whole lot about it, I just figured the bulb had blown. The next evening or weekend don't remember exactly when, I went out to replace the bulb. I noticed the hose had been dragged out to under the light. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I then started looking around. There was broken glass everywhere. Someone had evidently gotten some nice cold water and sprayed the bulb causing it to break. I then walked around the house for something else. Both sets of the patio doors had been knocked off tracked. Fortunately we had a board wedged in so that they wouldn't open and yet the would completely just "pop" over their track. The more you pushed the tighter the doors wedged. I immediately replaced the bulb in the light.

I just happened to be talking to the neighbor a couple of months ago and somehow we started talking about going ons and we got on the subject of the light. He mentioned that he had moved his bed because of it. Even though it is probably at least 800 or 900' away. Now that the garage is there, he shouldn't even see what he was seeing. He wasn't complaining - they were actually confused when the light wasn't working.
