Comparing free men to robbers is like comparing patriots to pirates.

Those who don't know their rights, have none. The founding fathers new best.

Freedom fighters or insurgents, just depends on which side you are on.

History is written by the winners, so the "founding fathers" called them patriots.

Not that I don't agree with them in that case, just not sure I agree with how far you are extrapolating it out.

Then again, isnt it great that we live in a place where we have these choices.

It depends on the scale too.
I worked my way through college doing construction, without a license or insurance. Looking back, I was lucky I didn't make any big mistakes. I did what I had to do to get through. The government has more than made up for those lost taxes though! They were just making an investment, they didn't know about!
I did scab jobs though. They never got bid out to real contractors.

Then I think about the lawns I mowed as a kid. I didn't pay any taxes and I didn't have any stickers and I was under age. Clearly a criminal, eh.

At some point good citizens will and should question the authority of a government that takes money away from those who take the responsibility to provide for themselves and gives that same money to those who refuse to do so AND are not required to pay taxes.

Many, if not most, Americans are under the impression that military budgets, foreign wars, education, infrastructure and space programs are what constitutes the bulk of where our tax money goes. We're too fat dumb and happy to pay attention to what they actually do with our money. The VAST majority goes to entitlements, as in medicare, medicaid, welfare, etc etc. That SHOULD bother all of us. It doesn't bother a lot of us because we're on the recieving end of that dole and vote to keep it that way.

Great comments AlanB. One more thing I will say about our Founders, they didn't seem to be the type to "go along, to get along".

And many of them paid a heavy price for their principles and ideas. Are there any like them left?

Comparing someone who violates the law for personal gain to a patriot is a slap in the face to every person who's ever served this country in any shape or form.

I see nothing "patriotic" about deliberately commiting a criminal act. I see it for what it truely is.....criminal.

Well, there is no way around it, the patriot hall of fame is full of men who willfully broke the current law of the land. Its just a fact. And just like all endeavors it was at least in part for personal gain.

And they did it over taxes and economics, money in other words.

So the analogy is not inappropriate, but there is a distinction, a point in which the current analogy does break down. The founding fathers did break the law. They were criminals. Some of their motivation was undeniably for personal gain. The difference is the way that they did it. They did it overtly, not covertly. And that is what differentiates a patriot and a simple tax evader. The patriot risks all and risks it in open opposition to overwhelming power. The simple tax evader can claim that its a matter of principle but cannot prove it if he acts in secret.

I'm all for dissent. I'm all for tax reform. I'm all for good citizens challenging bad laws even if it requires civil disobedience the way the civil rights movement did. I'm all for folks taking a stand. But only if they do it openly and are prepared to deal with consequences of provoking a powerful and dissent intolerant government. in other words if they put you in jail, take your property or burn down your 'compound' then you don't whine about it or claim that they infringed on the rights you rejected when you decided to really fight the law.

The upside to getting put in jail and having your compound burned, is your wife and kids qualify for low income housing, medicaid, free lunches at school and later on college grants and the wife can get welfare if she can prove she filled out an application at wal-mart.

My boy will probably even get a low or no interest government loan to start up his own grass cutting business which he can own for 5 years and sell to his cousin who just qualified for the same loan because my brother-in-law got his compound burned, too.

And if I get shanked in prison, they'll probably get even more. I hope they don't burn my compound though. I sure do like it.

Sorry guys, I couldn't resist. Ya'll come to my compound and I'll BBQ for ya'll to make up for it. BYOB. :D

Just some of the mistakes people make when starting a business:

1. Applying at city hall for a business license tax certificate. This guarantees you will pay an annual tax to the city. It doesn't give you a license to do anything except continue paying a tax. This will also guarantee you will receive a form to fill out so the county assessor can tax all of your equipment.

2. Putting a sign on your truck. If you just want to attract fleas, in the form of public servants, go ahead and lie down with them.

3. Applying for a state contractors license. This will guarantee you will not be the owner of your business - just the tax paying operator. The constitution guarantees the right to contract shall not be impared. Government licensing is an imparement, and an impediment.

4. Blabbing to just anyone about what it is you do. It is your business, no one elses. If a government agent questions your status, question their authority to ask you questions about your activity. And remember, if you are questioned, and it comes to you being summoned into a court for "breaking the law", ninety percent of the information used to convict you, comes from your blabber mouth.

It is best just to quietly go about performing your God given right and responsibility to make a living.

**** the beauracracy. Long live freedom.

Amen Brother!! My business motto: A.C.B.M.C.M. - All cash business making cash money.
