i have a case 580c loader backhoe that the bucket will not go down. could this be causedby low fluid or the weong hydraulic fluid? it does have a leaking hose in the hoe boom.

Check the fluid level, fix the hose, then see if it still does not work. You may have bucket pins that are rusted tight or bent. But if the hydraulics are not in good shape none of that matters. What year is yours? BTW the type of hydraulic fluid is probably not a significant factor. That would be more about seal longevity and cold weather performance.

Another welcome - are you referring to the hoe bucket, or the loader bucket? Sounds like you're talking about the hoe bucket, but more info would help.
If it's the hoe bucket, is it the boom, dipper or bucket itself that won't move?
Generally, down is easy
It's up that's hard - but if yours still has the boom latch in place, if that is latched the boom would only move if something breaks.
Without more info, it's hard to know if we're talking down to you or if you just bought the TLB and need to know everything there is to know - please clarify if possible... Steve

my problem is in the bucket of the front end loader, it is a 1977 580c the hydraulics have been working great up to this point, however i let a friend use it for the last year and when i went to bring it back home to use it he informed me of the problems. i am in the process of repairing the hydraulic leak but wanted to get a headsup if this doesn't take care of my issue

I guess we each have our own definition of the term "friend" - the few I call that would have either fixed it or had it fixed. The other kind don't get to borrow my stuff.
My hoe is a 580B, which has a totally different return to dig system (uses an extra hyd. cyl. in the curl circuit, that's connected to loader arms and pumps extra fluid into the curl circuit) than the c, d, and e models - those later ones used a cheaper to produce, electrical solenoid to directly change the bucket tilt as you raised and lowered the loader - I don't have manuals on those, but here's a link to the C's parts blowup

Maybe the solenoid (shown in the above as an un-named block, near items # 46-47) got stuck and is messing up your loader valve somehow? As I said, my familiarity with that system consists of knowing it exists
Does your loader refuse to lower whether you use power down or float? If you put it in float, turn off the tractor and come back tomorrow, will the loader STILL be up?

Remove the spool and check for debris.
Also look inside the cans on the bottom of the valve for broken springs or rust.

That could be something as simple as an external blockage on the joystick linkage, or much more complex - that loader valve spool has dual poppet type check valves, an adjustable spring-loaded float with (IIRC) 3 small ball bearings that snap into a detent groove, and multiple o rings - I've worked on everything from hot rods/dragsters to heavy equipment (my own), industrial process automation systems, etc, and after seeing what's inside that valve I wouldn't attempt to take it apart without a manual. Too many "surprises" inside

Not knowing what your background/experience is, hopefully I'm not "talking down" to you, not my intent - personally I'd rather be warned about something like this than to find out the hard way what's in Pandora's box
