Started this season blowing blue smoke and using oil. All last season it used 2 quarts of oil, this season it has used 3 quarts already and smokes even idling. 770 hours, could I have a broke ring or just needs rebuild?

Could be either of those, could be a stuck ring. You might try one of those products designed for stuck rings, nothing to lose, right? You also might try just running for a while, see if it clears up on it's own.....

I agree with Jagmandave. I think I would add Power Service to the fuel and Lucas oil treatment on my next filter and oil change. It can make a big difference.

I ran it hard Saturday for about an hour and a half. Redlined while mowing. When I first started it was smoking really bad, but it did clear up after about 20 minutes. But today while puttering around with a LS box smoothing some dirt it was smoking again. By the way in the hour and a half I was pulling it pretty good and it used over a quart of oil. I changed oil and filter at beginning of season but I may change again and add the Lucas oil treatment. Couldn't hurt.

Hmmm, that much oil sounds like a broken ring to me......
What about valve seals on these engines? Do they use them? Do they harden up like on auto engines?
