Smog Test

Someone where I work has a Jetta TDI. It has a bumper sticker "My Diesel kicks your Hybrid's MPG!"

Print this out and show it to that Prius driver that thinks your destroying the environment and they're saving it.

My brother has an 01 Jetta TDi, mostly highway miles he gets 50-52mpg and hand calculates every tank. It's not the most fun vehicle to drive, pretty loud, and vibrates a lot but I'd take one over a hybrid any day of the week!

Smog tests on new vehicles are a criminal waste of money. Just another meaningless tax....When is the last time you saw anything belching from the exhaust since the last K-car...

Most sensor failures cause enough driveabliity problems eventually to force a repair nowadays.

I still don't get the hybrid thing...It's not a "clean car", it's a coal fired car.

I saw a story on tv saying that a Prius has a larger environmental impact then a V8 truck that get 10 mpg over the course of 250,000 miles.

Reason being is the process of mining the batteries and manufacturing them is a very "dirty" process.

Our two vehicles are VW Diesels. My next car will be electric only. I'll happily pay a premium for the privilege (just as i did for the VW's.) Hopefully the dirty mining will be cleaned up and I'll be generating my own green power. We are getting a new roof and I priced solar cells but we will not be in this home long enough to justify it although the main reason was my wife didn't like the esthetics because the solar panels would have to go on the front facing part of our roof. Now if they made panels that looked like shingles...

I'm thinking Calibration needs to be done.

From the CA BAR page.

Q: How can I be sure a Smog Check analyzer machine is accurate?

A: All Smog Check inspection equipment must be BAR certified and in doing so meets stringent accuracy standards. Additionally, BAR certified Smog Check equipment requires calibration every three days. If the Smog Check equipment is not calibrated within that period of time, the equipment will not allow further tests until a full calibration is complete. In addition, if the equipment experiences any type of system failure, it will automatically lock out the technician from conducting further tests until a representative of the equipment manufacturer or the Bureau of Automotive Repair has identified and corrected any problems. These procedures apply to all BAR certified Smog Check equipment, whether the equipment is being used at a Smog Check station or at a Referee facility.

The machines are calibrated with a certified bottle of "smog" gas that has an exact mixture that the machine must report correctly.

I agree with powerpace. Machine needs calibration. Never seen any vehicle do a smog test and have 0 CO and 0 HC unless it wasn't running or inspector didn't have probe in exhaust pipe.

They have those now. Google "Dow Powerhouse Solar Shingles".

The print out indicated both CO2 & O2, so it was definitely connected and running. Not to mention that I was watching!

Must be that clean Mojave air going into the intake!
