slipping gears

I have a John Deere 5200 bought used many years ago, no manual. Just developed alot of play in the gear shift. Is this due to low gear oil, hydraulic fluid, or is something broken or just worn out?

Does the lever seem to rotate? What I have seen the most on these is a roll pin shears off in the lever that locates the lever in the pivot ball. It usually happens to the right side lever due to the extra stress of putting it in park, but either lever can do it. Check pin #5 in the parts diagram.
