Hi, I have a Massey Ferguson MF-50 with a freeman 4000 FEL, it has a front mount pump that I believe is going bad. My question is, what is better to use a single stage pump or a 2 stage? according to my manual it requires a pump that can put out 18gpm. Any help would be great.
Thanks Tim

You don't want a two stage pump in that kind of an application, the speed would be hard to control. It would move fast until it encountered a load and then slow down. An 18 GPM pump is a pretty good size pump. My two cents worth...........Mike

Does the pump only run the loader?

It must have some large diameter cylinders.

Ditto what mrmikey said. You dont want a 2-stage in that application

Yes it only runs the loader. I don't think the cylinders are any bigger than normal. I'm not positive what size the pump is, I'm only going by the manual online for it that says 18gpm pump. I'm going to try to find numbers or something on the pump.

I don't understand why you would replace the pump without knowing that it is bad.

What are the symptoms?

How much pressure is it putting out?

Can you hear the relief valve open?

the reason I think it's going bad is I broke the shaft from the pump to the motor. I found it was welded once before. I put a new shaft in and started it and the pump was smoking. Found I was low on hyd. oil, so I filled it up and now it will raise but super slow and only a little ways. It won't hold and also I have zero down pressure now. I new to this type of equipment, I don't know how to check pressure or relief valve. any help would be greatly appreciated. I just figured it would be easier to just replace the pump, the fel worked great before the shaft broke.

A new pump may not fix it.

If you can't troubleshoot hydraulic systems, take it to a hydraulic repair shop. Or take the pump and have it tested.

I may have to. Thanks

Raising the loader slow "can be" a pump issue. As can no down pressure. But not holding the load up...has nothing at all to do with the pump.

Agree with above. If you ain't comfortable diagnosing hydraulics....have someone diagnos it for you. You can spend a fortune replacing parts that ain't needed, because there ain't much in a hydraulic system that's cheap

Yep, I am finding that out.. lol Thanks

If you ran the pump without oil then there's a good chance you did damage to the pump. You could remove that cover to the pump and inspect inside the pump but be prepared for oil to come out. If you do remove the cover you can measure both the diameter of the gears inside and their thickness. That'll give you the displacement of the pump. You can find cubic displacement calculators for gear pumps on line. Just find one before you take the measurements so you don't miss a measurement.

18 GPM at what output pressure and at what RPM? You need all of those numbers to properly select a pump.
