I have a John Deere model 39 sickle mower. It's a great mower, does an excelllent job, but it's a pain in the ***** when it comes to moving it or even connecting it onto the tractor.

A number of the TBN members have built great dolly's for PHD's, tiller's, etc. so my question is has anyone done something for the sickle mower?

It is a particularly challenging build because of the offset center of gravity when the sickle is put in the upright position, plus there isn't much to clamp on to for rigidity.

I will be most interested in seeing what others have done.:D

Thanks y'all.
Glenn.

I don't even like storing them with the blade vertical; if you grab it there - and it's so easy to use those guards as a handle to grip - if the belt rotates at all & the sickle falls down, you can lose a finger pretty easy.

This one I'd be real careful with, for the balance & offset issues you mention.

You're so right.
Wheneve I pick up the sickle I have the support rod in one hand as well as a washer and the nut to secure it. It's heavy and can do real damage.

As I said earlier it is a real challenge to come up with something for this mower.

I hope others will contribute their thoughts on this as well.

Cheers.

I've built dollies for a lot of stuff. But for my sickle mower, no dolly. That, the rotary mower, box blade and land plane do not have dollies. Instead, I use the imatch (quick hitch device). So the big and heavy or clumsy things (like the sickle mower) just sit on a flat-ish surface. If I ever put the sickle mower on a dolly (for better storage), I'd be sure to have breaks on all the wheels so I could use the imatch.

A mix of dolly and non dolly stuff still makes for efficient storage, see the picture.

Not quite what you are looking for, but, a "here's the path one person took" answer.
