Shut it down or let it idle?

/ Shut it down or let it idle? #41
I live in south central PA and I can't say I've seen those signs...can't say I've looked for them either. I have seen them in the Buffalo area of NYS.
Some trucks do idle at Tom's in Shrewsbury...seen that. So, that "No Idling over 10K GVWR" might be a regional thing or just not being enforced too well.

Take a look at any rest area PennDOT maintains or legally any truck stop as well as any trucking terminal.

I
I THINK that it's the fact that these folks see the 18 wheelers at the truck stops idling during lunch, so they think they have to leave these noisy things running all the time. I guess it makes them feel like Cannon Ball Jones or something.

I drove a semi for a long time OTR (over the road), and I can tell you that most of us didn't leave them run just to be "Super Truckers". The reasons most leave them running are:
1. If its cold or hot, and you turn it off, go inside for a few hrs to shower, shave, shine, and eat then what temp would you think that bunk is now? Would you turn your heat/air off in the house while your at work?
It's the same with sleeping in the Truck.

2. In the bitter winter months the constant vibration , and heat of the motor keeps the diesel from gelling, can you imagine 300 gallon doing that? Now they have those pony motors that run on gas, so that helps out.

Please understand its our home away from home, and we want it as comfortable as possible.

You missed my point. I was not questioning the truckers leavinig theirs running. I was speculating that the one ton, wannabe truckers, were copying the 18 wheeler guys in an attempt to look like Cannon Ball Jones.

I dunno...a quick stop to buy cigs or something...might let it idle myself...

hahahahahahhha...surely you jest...
Perhaps my genes are defective, but as I have gotten older I don't want to breath any more of it than I have to. Get some entertaining headaches after tailing poor running trucks etc.

Ohh ok I'm with ya now. I had to re-read both of the post, I got it all straightened out. Sorry bout that.

Please turn it off. People don't want to smell diesel exhaust.

+1

In my part of the country it seems that everyone nowdays has a diesel truck and it seems that at least half of them want to leave it idling. My wife and I used to like to stop at the Sonic every once in a while for a fruit smoothy or maybe even the occasional greasy burger. It has gotten to a point where no matter when you stop there, you will have to listen and smell about a half dozen of these Cannon Ball wannabe's order a burger and sit there to eat it with their side exhaust aimed into someones window. So, we've just given up on the Sonic.

Oh, Sonic is probably not nationwide, so I'll point out that Sonic is a drive in hamburger chain.

Just like a couple with 3 kids carrying on in a restaurant. If this is part of their daily environment, it is always around them. So, they are no longer aware of it. And, it becomes perfectly normal.

Perhaps that is why they often seem to be surprised  when you try tell them it bothers you.

At least 6 threads on this subject already. :confused2:

That never stopped us before...

Yep....and when were done with this one....lets discuss bucket hooks again.

We could talk flail mowers... .

If we can't come up with any more ways to say the same things about idling, I vote we move on to bucket hooks. Be sure to post lots of pics of your hooks and comment on the merits of weld on vs bolt on. Maybe some links to specific vendors too. :D

Uh, I welded a plate to my bucket before bolting the hook to it. How does this method conicide with the bolt on/weld on discussion?

:D Actually, quite well. That is an important aspect to any well groomed side discussion.

I guess we could really PO some people if we start discussing hooks on flail mowers and what fuel additives we use when running them. :drink:

re: the idling diesel pickups- yeah I leave mine idling while fueling up, just a few minutes..if the pump is as fast as it should be less than 3 I'd say.
As for wearing out the starter- yeah I've bought 2 starters in 185,000 miles, and they aren't inexpensive, I figure one of them cost 10x more than all the fuel I've ever used idling for a quick stop.
Now I do have a system I designed and built to leave my truck idling on either a timer or as long as I have a hidden switch flipped.
The engine must be on and running with the key, then I flip the hidden switch and remove the key, lock the doors and I'm away.
Truck stays runnng but can't be driven, shifter is locked and if someone was to break in and try to steal it while idling as soon as they touch the brake pedal to try to move the shifter it shuts down. If they happen to find the hidden switch they still can't restart it without the key.

Why do I have this? --The timer function is for turbo cool-down - I like to see my EGT drop below 400 after a hard run before shutdown, so shoot me. Sometimes I want to jump right out of the truck when EGT is still high after a hard pull without sitting there waiting. Usually a minute or so will do it.
The other, and main, reason is because it gets HOT here in the south and occasionally while travelling with our two dogs I'll leave the truck running with the AC on for them while we grab a quick meal.
I wonder what the anti-idling laws would say about that? Can't leave the dogs in a hot truck, its cruel and illegal in itself...can't take them into the restaurant, can't leave the truck idling...hmmmm:confused:

Oh BTW what fuel additive should I use when the tractor is idling while I weld on my bucket hooks? And does it really matter if I use SUDT while operating the bucket with the hooks on it or should I use Amsoil?

Hmmmm, 3/8 or 5/16 hooks? what interest rate are you paying on the tractor and does your township tax chicken coops? Lastly, are the ROPS up and locked and seatbelt fastened while you do this?
