I am glad that everything turned out positive for you and your dog. I agree with the other members in suggesting that you have sufficient firepower available close at hand. Sincerely hope that you don't have encounters like that ever again. Best wishes.

lockhaven "what is the law about shooting cats Mousefield?"

Well our feeling is the wild life was here before us so if they don'r bother us we won't bother them. If they are a nuisance by menacing or threatening ourselves or live stock them I will take action, but only as a last resort. In this case, if I had my gun on me, I would have taken action, having a cougar that close to me and only 40? feet from my 2 cows is just to close. Sometimes my wife goes out late evening by herself and locks up the chickens and sees her goats to bed in the barn, she has no desire to meet a cougar.

Are you sure it wasn't stalking you? They like people too!

Don't think it was after me. I had spent the previous 1/2 hour loading the trailer with firewood; this was about 30 feet from the south fence of the pasture. The cougar was on the north side, the fences are only about 60 feet apart with bush and trees on the north side. Think it was first attracted to the cows and then the dog went to check the cougar out. It then followed the dog back towards me down the east side of the fence line. Nice dog, EH.

We had one on our property a few months ago--at least we had several deposits of cougar poop. I fired up the chainsaw and brush cutter to cut out all the brush--cover and habitat for the cougar and it's prey--and I think the activity scared it off.

At that time someone sent me a list of cougar attacks. One happened on Vancouver Island at Kyuquot, it attacked and killed a 7 year old boy in a school yard with other kids around. Here's a portion of the list:
Mountain Lion Attacks from 1991 to 2000

Lastly, I thought Canadians couldn't own pistols. Obviously wrong.

I read somewhere that if you go into the woods in cat country 1 out of 10 times you are likely to be stalked. Maybe not eaten but definitely watched

You can own a pistol or revolver in Canada, it was a real process to get the permit for one and most people can’t be bothered. This situation is why I got one, much easier to carry the 357 on my hip than carry a rife or shot gun around. Kyuquot, a small village on the ocean, is 50-60 miles north of us as the crow flies. You can get there by boat or plane, went there once for a weekend with the wife, brother and his wife. Good area for salmon fishing.

I would report it, would only shoot it if I had to, therefore it is justified. Here you can shoot things like bears if they are threatening and you have taken reasonable steps to stop it from being there. Do think I was lucky to see it when I did. Was just finishing off loading the back of the trailer and had 2 pieces of firewood in my hands. Hate to think if I had missed seeing it and had turned my back to it and was bending over to pickup more firewood.
