Do you have to report it if you have to shoot it or is it shoot shovel shut up?

Shoot? Shoot what?

I have a backhoe and I know how to use it ;-)
(just speaking hypothetically, of course)

24 feet is about the length of my pickup... if you managed to keep from messing your drawers then you're a better man than I . ;)

Wow. Just read your thread. Approximately how large are cougars in your area? Was is bigger than your dog?

We have the largest cougar populations per sq mile in North America. Our dog is a purebred lab; I would think the cougar was twice its size. A full grown cougar can weigh in the 150 pound range. The more I though about it I'm glad I didn't have my back to it and bending over picking up more firewood. The picture I got off the internet, sure looks similar to the one I saw.

Of the estimated 4000 cougars in Canada, 3500 live in BC. Of this, nearly a quarter reside on Vancouver Island (itself only representing 3% of BC's land area), resulting in the highest concentration of cougars in the world.

Cougars, panthers, pumas, wild cats, mountain lions, swamp cats whatever you prefer, though denied by most states, are virtually everywhere in North America any more, probably always were and the overpopulation of deer has their numbers increasing. I've seen 2 on the Eastern Shore since 1979, my buddy has a picture of two 3/4 grown I assume to be siblings in his side yard eating a rabbit. There are about 8-10 sightings a year from Cape Charles, VA to the C & D Canal. When I was kid growing up in NC on the outskirts of the Dismal Swamp it was just accepted that bears, bobcats and panthers were part of the hazards in the swamp.

Well that cougar is still around. Wife saw it today about 1:30 but about 150 feet away. By the time she got me and I got out there is was nowhere to be seen. Think it is unusual for them to be out during the early afternoon. Called conservation and told them we see it again and we will shoot it. The main office is going to contact the local officer and hopefully they will deal with it. Wife is not impressed having it around, lucky we didn't have the goats out yet, our 5 young goats may be just too attractive for it to pass up.

Whoa! That's something that needs to be addressed immediately. Large predators in your back yard is something ugly waiting to happen. You've had your warnings, it's time to get this under control.
I personally would be very reluctant to extinguish such a large predator, I would do my utmost to get it find another place to hang out.
I would really like to hear what the "conservation" people have to say about that. I don't know but I would guess that behavior is very non typical.
How much do you think this cat weighs?

Mountain Lion Attacks from 1991 to 2000

Did anyone read the incident in this report from July 2, 1992? Wow. Some people.

I do remember hearing about some of these attacks on the news, pretty scary to have one so close.
One morning twenty some years ago my wife and I were leaving for work one dark rainy morning and a black panther jumped across the road in front of us on our driveway. We had lost a calf before then and so had my uncle and couldn't figure it out until then. Of course they aren't officially around here but I guess that big cat didn't know he wasn't supposed to be here.

I hope you and yours are safe.
