Another head scratcher spotted for sale on CL. I do not understand the reason behind this, but why would someone shorten the ROPS on a tractor??? Just pure stupidity, imho. Honestly, it seems like it would/could be more dangerous than not having one at all.

Maybe he couldn't afford a foldable ROPS? If that tractor rolled over one could get a "headache"!

No argument about it being a dumb idea. Only speculation on my part, but maybe he was storing it in a building with limited headroom.

Im not saying its a great solution, however, a lot of thos old Kubotas didnt have ROPS at all from the factory, so at least he added some sort of ROPS.

Did the ad say they actually shortened it? This is not the first older Kubota I have seen with short ROPS. I've actually seen a number of pictures similar to that one. I've always thought they were short like that so they can get into low hanging areas.

headache or headlessness???????

I have had mine folded ONE time--- and it went right back up--

It just did not feel right....

No, the ad did not say it had been shortened. I just made that assumption (yes I know the old saying).

Now, I guess it's possible it might have been imported like that. So either it was made short somewhere overseas to start with, or someone shortened it somewhere along the way. I guess you can take your pick. I do believe that any ROPS built here in the US for consumer products must be certified, I'm pretty sure our fed's would not certify that one as a safe ROPS.

But really, it doesn't matter how it got that way. I just know I wouldn't operate a tractor with that on it.

WHY?

It seems there are so many people on here that are to uptight when it comes to these things. Are you saying you would nover or have never operated and old 8n, 9n, 2n, or ay older fafm tractor for that matter?? It makes you wonder how anyone ever got anything done without them.

When I bought my l3400 4 years ago, it was the first tractor I ever owned with a ROPS. It was not foldable either. I had it off of the tractor before I ever hit 5 hours. It was constantly catching branches in the woods and when mowing, not to mention it won't fit in a 7' garage door.

You just have to use common sense and know the limitations of your equipment.

And since I am already going to get a hard time about this statement from the saftey police, I will also add that I removed the little flip up PTO shield as well. It only lasted until the first time I tried to hook up the pto shaft. It was just a PITA.

Not to mention I also disabled the saftey switch in the seat. I always used to bushhog with the 8n. Being able to stand up to see better, and avoid branches, as well as stretch a little was something I didn't relize how often I actually did it, until I got the bota and it kept turning off. But I did good, this one made it about 15 hours before being removed.

IMO all of these saftey features tend to make people feel TOO comfortable. As if noting can hurt them on their "safe" tractor. A lack of some of these things tends to make people a little more cautious. And the ones aren't...............well I think thats called natural selection.

Different strokes for different folks ... freedom is a wonderful thing.

What's the difference between that and a folded down ROPS? If you had to mow what I mow, you'd realize that mowing with a folded ROPS presents far less a risk than a rapidly churning chainsaw blade that would have to be used to eliminate every low hanging item I mow around.

If the guys lawn is flat and has tree limbs, I think the risk of snagging a branch with the ROPS and flopping over backwards would be higher than the chance of gravity suddenly letting up and allowing the tractor to float up, turn upside down like Discovery One, and then slam violently into the ground when gravity mysteriously returns.

I have on at least 3 occasions been smacked in the head by stuff that the ROPS caught...

So I can see it both ways...

That ROPS looks like an add-on for the sale of the tractor. My guess is it came off a zero-turn mower of some sort (I've seen pics of ZTRs with short ROPS). Judging from the picture, that's a mighty old Kubota and probably didn't have the ROPS originally...or might be a grey market machine with an Asian designed ROPS. No idea why it would be that short though.
Doesn't look like much protection...definitely not if a full side rollover or rear rollover, but it might prevent a full roll.
As short as it is, I think I would not wear a seatbelt when operating...

Maybe it's Dorf's tractor.

I honestly see no reason to even have the thing on the tractor at all.

Unless of course it's telescoping:laughing:

Is it roll over protection (on its side) or roll upside down protection. The ROPS on my Ford 1900 is factory and the top of my head sticks 6" above it and I am only 5'10". As others have stated ROPS and branches dont go together. I have been hit in the back of the head numerous times by branches that I ducked under and and the ROPS caught and bent forward. If my fenders weren't mounted to the ROPS I would remove it.

When i mow in low clearance area's I either go really slow and puck up all the branches so they dont snag on the ROPS or i back into the area since the mower sticks off the back so far. I would fold them down (on 3720) but since we live on a steep hill i feel it is better up. I can see why they cut the ROPS low because it isnt exactly fun to get hit with branches and if they dont live on a hill it still would be a safe tractor to use. I do know that those are factory ROPS cut short since on my local craigs list there are tons of these tractors with the same ROPS but longer.

The owner is just selling it for what you see, it's up to whoever buys it as to what they want and how they want it, they can clearly see what they are getting and if they want it the way it is - so what? The man didn't advertise it and say "now you MUST buy this thing" - whoever looks at it has a choice. Some riding mowers are big and hardly ever see anything at all on them. Nothing would have been said if it didn't have any ROPS at all, soooo.

low areas.. mean under limbs that would shave the operators head off at his shoulders?

Almost looks like a rops for a ZTR.. can't see them being usefull for a backflip.. as you neck is still gonna snap.. might help some on a side roll.. so I guess the deal is as soon as you get into a fault.. be praying for a side roll :(
