If you have to borrow the same tool more than twice you should have one yourself.

Only two rules in my garage:

1. The BOSS is always right!

2. "IF" in doubt, refer back to RULE 1 !!!!!

I have a few for my shop.

If your loafing there you need to sweep or help with the project.
If Im working on something dont try to take over the project with advice.
Dont comment on the condition or content of the shop.
Dont try to cover my pinup calender if your Girlfriend or wife is with you I dont hide it from mine.
Dont complain about my beer brand or soda brand.
Dont spit in the floor or throw your cigarette in the floor.
Dont tell me how much my junk is worth for scrap.
I have a loaner tool box then a tool box I gaurd with my life and if you value yours dont borrow from mine.
Dont ask to restore your car in the back of my shop.
Dont whine about your foot being burnt by slag from a torch when you stand there wearing flip flops in a shop.

I lost a friend over loaning the back of my shop out to a friend for car restoration. Had a friend thathad a 66 Mustang and wanted to put a motor and transmission in it. I said yes, and on Friday I come home to 8 folks I dont know working on his car and anothers pick up. They had put the motor in and had the thing on blocks sanding and working saying they were restoring it. Later I talked with him and he said it would be few days and no more friends there. he didnt touch it a few weeks and I had a big job come in the shop. I griped at me about rolling his car to the side bay. That flew all over me I took the Hyster and shoved the car out side and put all his tools in the floor board.

The only tool I loan out is a beat up screwdriver. Why is it beat up? Well, you see, the only tool I loan out is a beat up screwdriver....

The following words are never to be used when describing any tool a man owns: "cute" and "little". So saying "Hey, that's a cute little tractor you got there" pretty much means you're about to leave and won't ever come back .

The following words are allowed when describing any man's spouse/girlfriend: "cute" or "little" as in "That's a cute little lady you got there."

My only rule is "keep out" which simplifiies everything. Of course enforcing that rule has been the challenge.

If you don't know what I am doing, I don't want your advice on how to do it.

If you don't know what I am doing, I don't want your advice on how to do it.

That reminds me of another one...

It's likely that I don't even know what I'm doing, so asking won't help the cause.

   / SHOP RULES! #33
If there is just one beer left in the fridge it is NOT yours... unless of course you're making room for the six pack you brought.

   / SHOP RULES! #34
If you do any welding or cutting on a vehicle, it spends the night OUTSIDE.

I have a piece of melted defroster duct hanging in the shop to remind me of why I started that rule.

Also, a neighbor also had an ambulance catch fire on his hoist while he was in town chasing exhaust parts. Put a hole in the shop roof and really sooted the place up. Seeing all those red lights flashing in your driveway when you get home is NOT good thing.

And if you should want a beer don,t you dare say a word about the brand:DDave

apparently you've met my dad. back when i was younger, i remember waking up to a racket downstairs one sunday morning. i went down to see my father half buried in the fridge, complaining because he couldn't find any budweiser. after coming up with a bottle of geary's pale ale, he sat down & complained about how it tasted all the way through the bottle. then he got another and complained all the way through that one too.

oh yeah, for the rules...

i generally have friends bring twisted hunks of metal over that used to be workable machinery until they used it. if i somehow manage to resurrect something that has no business being other than scrap weight, don't complain if it isn't the same as it was when new.

When working on the race car, no beer until the job is done.

   / SHOP RULES! #37
If you bring it to me to fix because you don't know how, don't ask me why I am doing something or ask me why dont you do such and such unless you want to take it home and fix it yourself.
I also like the mechanic shop rule that quotes a shop rate of $$$ per hour then adds about 10 bucks to it if you watch and then adds about 10 more if you help.
Another one: dont bring me something to weld up for you after you have screwed it up trying to fix it with improper rods, wrong material or just major lack of know how. I hate removing other folks screw ups that usually takes longer to do that to actually fix the thing once you get all the bad welding off.

   / SHOP RULES! #38
I give lifetime warranty on welding if it's good stuff and none if it junk.

I do loan tools and in my mind I write then off. If I can't do that I don't loan it. I suppose this will stop once tools get damaged or lost. My wife had agreed to pay for any tools lost this way or at Church.

If you bring it to me to fix because you don't know how, don't ask me why I am doing something or ask me why dont you do such and such unless you want to take it home and fix it yourself...

AMEN!

If you want to fix it your way, then you have to fix it. If I'm doing it I'm doing it my way.

Also, there are no warrantees on free repairs. I only guarantee the repair to be worth what you paid for it... Nothing.

That reminds me of another one: If I tell you that you don't owe me anything for my time, etc.; just leave it alone and be grateful. Don't be a jerk about forcing money on me and cause me to be a jerk in order to stand my ground. If you really feel like you owe something, pass it on to the next guy that you do a favor for. If I want money for what I'm doing, you'll know up front before I do it.

   / SHOP RULES! #40
Never...I mean never...tell anyone (family included) that they can store "a few things" in the corner of your shop for "a little while". Your prized mancave can easily become a storage unit and valuable space will steadily be lost to "a couple small items" from those that mean well but never seem to get around to moving these items out!

Sounds trivial, but what may seem like a harmless act of kindness can get out of hand.
