Shifting On The Fly

So i have a 1996 John Deere 5400 Diesal tractor with a Shuttle shift 4 speed and 4 range option. This is the first tractor i have owned that is a John Deere. It is used, ive only had it for a few weeks though. I have had previous tractors in the past, and also borrowed other tractors from friends and they have all been Kubota. I Noticed with this tractor i cannot clutch and shift gears on the fly and i constantly stall from not having high enough rpms and i end up dumping the clutch and stalling. why wont this tractor shift on the fly like the other Kubotas did?

What does the manual say about shifting within a range vs. shifting between ranges?
If you don't have the manual, should get one.

If you do not have the manuals here is a link to order them. Along with some other URLs you may find of interest. You should be able to able to shift speeds on the go, but most be stopped to shift ranges. Note you MUST BE stopped to put it into Park.

To your question, does the clutch have a half inch of free play? Have you tired depressing the fuel pedal a little more?

That's what I thought too, but according to TractorData.com, there was a 9 speed (3 range) collarshift transmission available with the 5400. This is a non-synchronized (gears as well as range selection), so I'm wondering if that's what cassatucky actually has.

Cassatucky...if you have the shuttle (reverser) transmission, you would have a reverser lever just to the left of your steering wheel...do you?

Roy, I also first looked at tractordata.com figured the 4 on the range was a typo and should have been 3. If he had collarshift there would have been some grinding mentioned.

Tractordata also shows John Deere Top-Shaft Synchronized - Three gears (1-3), plus reverse, in three ranges (A-C). Gear shifts are synchronized using the clutch. Tractor must be stopped to shift range. The description matchs what is on my tractor, but on my tractor it is call SyncShuttle.

It could be the TSS Reverser that would be nice since it is a wet clutch.
