Thanks... Is there a particular brand or place I should look for one? Easy to install? picture of one by any chance?

Thanks,

Ryan

Hmmm, I ordered my brushhog with one and it is safely, I hope, stored in a shipping container about 41 miles away. It doesn't look like much and mounts right onto the gearbox side of the PTO shaft.

Here's a picture of one that replaces the shear pin. also availible with spline connections in and out for tractor end of implement shaft. Every dealer has them.

You adjust the exposed bolts for desired slippage. if it's slipping too much you should be able to feel heat build up. There should be no slippage most of the time unless something solid is hit or your feed rate is too high ie traveling too fast for the mower. This can happen it you have too much HP for the mower. It's possible to set the clutch so tight that the gearbox would fail first, not the way to go.

That looks just like mine even the color but the price is out of line, especially with shipping. These are the items where it pays to have a relationship with your dealer since his cost is likely low.

When they are delivered it is safe to assume that the clutch is too tight and the instructions are good to help you adjust it.

Man, at that price ($117++) you can buy an awful lot of grade 2 bolts.

Haven't some of those slip clutches frozen up in those mowers and damaged the gear box? I have only used mowers with shear bolts over 30 years of mowing and never damaged a gear box yet. The shear bolt mowers are a lot cheaper and you usually don't break many shear bolts as long as you start the mower at low RPMs which you probably should do with all mowers whether you use a slip clutch or not.

Good info in this thread, but I can't get the image of baby head rocks out of my head!

Thank you again for all the info, I will check further into the slip clutch, sounds like a good deal, I will check with the dealer also....

Sorry if the image of the little heads flying and tumbling is disturbing. It makes me laugh every time I think of it. I do a good bit of competitive off-road dirt bike riding in the woods and when a trail ahead is described as being full of baby heads then you know it will be rough.

I have two little girls with the youngest at 3 months. You have to enjoy these things.

Didn't mean to imply I didn't enjoy the image, here's a smile-thing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Dirt bikers have to be able to laugh at a lot, eating all that mud and dirt.
