Shear bolt madness

Okay, I have successfully changed the bolt and am operational again. Thanks to all that replied, every answer was helpful even if to just verify that I was already trying the right things. In the end, the bolt was rounded over on the front side so the advice about rotating it 180 degrees was the key. Even. Then. It took a moderate amount of force to drive it out. I did locate a pin punch but I'm not sure if that factored in at all. Here's some pictures cause I know we all love pictures.

I have a Meteor SB51 blower that calls for shear bolts 6mm x 40 grade 8.8 and 1/4 x 1 grade 2. I was thinking about buying a package of shear bolts they sell for smaller snowblowers like MTD and Ariens. They look about the same size and have the grooves in the shank already. Do you think these will work?

The Meteor bolts are metric. There might be issues with fit for the diameter.

For my money, I buy the Kubota shear bolts for everything (impeller and fan) as IMHO it is a small price to protect the HST and other running gear . I buy a bag for each and keep them in my tool box along with the wrenches to change them. I keep a nail in the box to push out the sheared bolt.

I don't understand why you guys are breaking so many shear bolts. In my lifetime I think I may have changed a half dozen on any piece of equipment. I can't remember the last one actually.

I looked at finding generic shearbolts when I first got the blower last year but with the grooves and the length of 2.25" I had no success and quickly decided that Kubota bolts were the way to go. I did not want to risk my warrantee to save a buck or two on a bolt.

I don't think you understand the situation. The BX2750D snow blower uses special shear bolts which have a reduced diameter at the shear points as seen in this photo. This is a 2750D auger shear bolt.

The reduced diameters prevents a bur from jamming up the shank, in theory anyway. I have sheared 8-10 bolts with mine, auger and fan wheel, and have always been able to easily push the shank out with a nail. I use a nail because I think it's easier to find the old shank "feeling" around with the pointed head as apposed to the flat head of a 3/16" or 1/4" punch. The fan wheel hole cannot be seen without a mirror; it's back inside the shroud, so a good "feel" is necessary to find the hole/shank. So while you would not normally think of a nail as being a better tool in a shear bolt situation, I like it better than a punch in this situation.

Hi Dean,

A tip I learned here on TBN about inserting a new fan pin: If you look at the drive shaft from the front gearbox on the 2750D, you'll see a drilled hole just forward (towards the gearbox) of the fan, maybe an inch or so. The hole for the shear pin is in direct alignment with this drilled hole. So line up the hole for the shear pin fan with this drilled hole and the pin will push right in without trying to spin it around to feel for it.

That is great info, Peter. Thanks for that. While I don't shear nearly as many bolts as I did before putting on new skids, I still do shear one occasionally and as you know the fan bolt can cause you grief. That tip will certainly help with that situation.

Reason for shear bolt breakage here in Southern Maine is heavy wet snow and I think the cumulative effect on the strength of the bolt. Additionally, I have a sand/gravel/dirt drive that sometimes has a large stone that gets picked up as well as the occasional tree limb and chunks of ice. Before the ground freezes I plow the snow and get most of the loose stuff out of the way of the blower but there are always a few stones that seem to grow during the winter. Stay safe!
