sharp blades

Just sharpened the blades on my Exmark ZT the other day and removed all the debris and twine.....WOW! The sharp blades made a huge difference in the quality of the cut. It's perfect /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My father always told me not to "sharpen" them, as they get weak along the edge and blunt (roll over on themselves) quickly. I'd don't know about that at this point, but what I do know is that if I need to change the blades more often due to sharpening them (sharp), then so be it. The cut is unmatched.

Yep, Jim, if you put a real fine edge on the blades, they can get nicked, chipped, etc. more easily, but if they don't hit anything but grass and weeds, they cut better. The angle at which you sharpen them can also make some difference in how long they stay sharp. But I guess I'm much like you. If you have the right equipment, and I do, it isn't a big deal to remove and sharpen them again if they get nicked.

In the past I've sharpened blades several times before replacing them. Like Bird said, if the edge is real fine they damage more easily. But I definately believe in sharpening them when they need it and when they get to were they aren't worth sharpening... get new ones.
