Seat (auto car company) had bought the body stampings for the 1964 Dodge Dart. So you would see them running around,

I had to look this one up, because Seat was a joint venture between Fiat and the Spanish government. (sold to VW in 1987) and i couldnt imagine how a Dodge Dart fits in their line up..

The Dodge Dart was built by Barreiros, which was a Chrysler Europe subsidiary for a short while, the truck branch ended up as Renault (Volvo owned)
The Dart came as knocked down units from Argentina to Spain.

I rode in one those weird, ugly Citroens, with air ride.

Air ride, they had hydraulic suspension struts coupled to nitrogen filled membrane accumulators, just like modern farm tractor front axle suspension. Only Citroën had it in 1955, and they engineered the French way... had their own, green coloured LHM oil for no reason..

I love those super quirky Citroen DS.
My Brothers GF father back in the late 70's had a few.
Changing a tire by just raising the other 3 corners was so wild to a teenage me.

My neighbour repaired the suspension on one, and had it parked on high ride height to see if it would leak down or not. I had the other neighbours laughing when i said that Martins Xantia looked like a startled cat, with its back high up in the air.

Good analysis. That roller/compactor is likely around 26,000lbs. The tractor loader another 10,000. I can't imagine how overloaded the pin weight is on that truck. There are some nutjobs out there...

Or maybe he was just inspired by that tv ad from maybe 10 years ago with the guy in a tacoma supposedly pulling the space shuttle.

The municipal services in the city i worked, gave their employees a Renault Twizzy 10 years ago. Next to him at the traffic lights, i looked him dead in the eyes with a look on my face that said "are you serious ?" He instantly stopped looking around and stared into the traffic light. I grinned and thought "yup, this guy is embarrassed "

Not nearly so dramatic but I lost a baby's highchair that was older than me, in a similar manner. Somehow it lifted straight up out of my little 4x4 utility trailer and flew away.

The sides of the trailer are plywood panels higher than this highchair and everything in there with it was large objects wedged tight. I hadn't imagined anything could happen. But I saw it in the mirror lift then fly out. There was some aerodynamic effect I hadn't anticipated.

Took the next offramp, found only splinters.

Sis was pissed. We both had used it as infants and I was taking it to her for her little granddaughter. Oops!

Aerodynamics of objects in trailers or truck beds at highway speeds can definitely be surprising. Never assume weight alone will keep something in place (even absent an accident or sudden stop - just normal driving), as you've learned.

Aha! Yep, I think that's exactly what happened, 'hauling something wrong' from not considering everything that could happen.

I had assumed that nothing wedged tight in this little guy that I built for a 'jeep trailer' could fly out ... ... Nope. There had to be aerodynamic lift force. In the mirror I saw the high chair hovering half-out for a moment. Then gone.

Incidentally, and way off topic - (yeah I do that a lot )

The 1999 Subaru Outback and 2005 Ford Focus Wagon in this 2005 photo are still
what we drive today. Neither has given a us reason to replace it. And they still look as good as this photo - California cars! I would love to buy a new car but can't justify that, so long these perform and look same as when I bought them new. -End of rant-.

When it does go sideways...

10 years ago on my morning commute i saw some drywallers hauling sheetrock in a similar way. One by one they broke under the ratchet strap and there was lots of sheetrock on the road. They went onto the shoulder and i could carry on before a traffic jam was created by all those people slamming the brakes when theres something on the road.

I was hauling a washer and dryer that were brand in the boxes and the dryer tried to float out of a pickup bed. They were tied down up against the cab to keep them from sliding back and forth. I had a buddy with me and it was a regular cab so when it started to move up we both saw it out of the corner of our vision. We tightened up the tie down.

I had a full lift of 2" thick foam sheets fly out of the bed. This is the full package that they drop at the lumberyard. I was doing foam under my slab so I bought like 5 full lifts. The yard is only 5-6 miles, so a friend and I took my PU up there, bought 5, and loaded the first one in the bed. 8' bed, so the 4x4x8' "block" of foam (fully shrink wrapped into a solid block) sat in there perfectly. Stuck up above the cab a few inches. First 2, no issue, but it was a bit of a windy day.

Third one was a different story. The shrink wrap at the top front must have not been tight or had ripped a bit. We were driving along like the previous 2 and suddenly heard this BRRRRRRAAAAPPPPPPP for a second or so, and then WHOOMP. Air got under the top sheet or two somehow (again, wrapping flaw I assume) and it lifted that enough to pull the entire block of foam out of the truck and drop it on the road. Fortunately nobody following close. Picked it all up (had flown apart due to this impact) and put it back on WITH A STRAP this time... A full lift was heavy enough that it took the two of us to lift it, so never thought it could catch flight. Learned that day about putting at least one strap on EVERYTHING...
