Driving a 42 ton truck over a bridge with signs warning of it's 14 ton limit is beyond stupid. An $11,000 fine for a bridge that will cost $1,000,000 to replace.
The fun thing is, in our town there is a single lane bridge which has an 8 ton weight limit: when upgrading the entrance to this bridge by dumping more dirt to widen the corner, and adding a two foot wide pedestrian walkway on each side (so the guardrails could be extended away from the narrow roadway so the tailswing of silage trailers wouldnt swipe the guardrail off, every 3 weeks after it was repaired: it hasnt been damaged for 4 years so it works
They did not increase the weight rating.
The unofficial statement of the responsible city councilor said that the technical capacity was 20 ton axle loads and 50 ton total (trucks here, weigh up to 50 ton, and the big floatation slurry tankers with four individual 650/65R38 tractor tires in line, do have 20 ton axle loads when loaded, and with a big disk injector on the back)
But that if they officially put up signs that represented the technical capacity of the bridge, their liability insurance would bill them an additional 50.000 euro per year..
He said, we know what happens in real life and we know it is no problem. But we want to spend that insurance fee differently, not on a bridge for only local traffic....
