I found out that we have 2 scrap metal yards that will take appliances for nothing. Beats paying for disposal. I wonder tho how they "reclaim" the Freon????

The scrap yard I used to go to would take the refrigerators for free and pay scrap price for everything else. Now they charge $15, take the Freon out, then sell the fridge for scrap.

Locally they take any scrap from free. Or the scrapyard buys it. It’s fence wire and demolition debris they won’t take. I have to pay to dump carpet, drywall, and shingles. No lumber is allowed either but I burn that.

Where I am they will take anything that will fit in the 90 gallon container. (I once cutup a 24 ft. Sailboat and put it in the container over a months time. (Pick up was twice a week).

I usually sell old appliances, water heaters, stoves, dishwashers, fridges, etc. to the scrap yard.

I wish I had a pic, but don't. This last bit about appliances reminded me that last year I helped my Mom clean up some stuff. She put an old truck cap and a stove down by the road. A guy in Jeep Cherokee stopped put the cap on his roof upside down and wrestled the stove up into it. He strapped it all down with a pair of ratchet straps and took off...

Interesting! I see that I'm not the only one to do this, although the one I cut up was a small one person racing catamaran.

Twice a year our dumps do 'free' days, basically anything you can haul. People save all kinds of bigger junk including old roof metal, appliances, mattresses and just about everything else that won't go in a normal trash can or bag. That all gets loaded onto a trailer, truck, or both, or multiple loads on those free days. That's when you get to see some fun loads running down the roads with people that don't usually load that kind of stuff. Most of it makes it there. Most.
Around here, the scrap yards will pay you for old roof metal and other appliances as long as you don't have freon in them.
If they have freon in them, they will take them for free in many cases.

Sounds like he was DUI, with at least 1 prior and crossed over the center line.
