Guy down the road a half mile got a small dump truck. Not sure of the make or capacity. Maybe 5 ton or so. It sits all the time. Never saw it in use. I've asked if he could bring me some rock, offered to pay for the loads plus his fuel and time. He said he would. Haven't heard from him since.

Nada.

My parents had a neighbor at the lake who had a dump PU and it was fairly new, but looked 75 years old from al of the abuse it took.

No thank you!

Just imagine how a regular bed pickup would look with the same treatment. The bed on my 1992 dump truck still looks reasonably good after routine treatment that would total a regular bed in 5 minutes. The cab isn’t perfect but it’s not bad to be 28 years old. A tiny bump on a pickup bed is thousand in damage. Anything short of bending the frame and the dump bed is good to go. I can lift the my backhoe off the ground on my tailgate. I’ve seen dozens of pickup tailgates totaled with a fraction of that abuse.

I have a short bed heavy duty diesel and will never go back to a long bed. With the longer cab it's much nicer. My dump trailer has a 10' bed and I have 2 flatbeds. One is a deckover with a 16 X 8.5 bed. The other is a tilt deck wit a 22 X 7 bed. All 3 trailers can carry more weight than the truck bed as well. The short bed works just fine for me. Each trailer has a use that they do better than the truck. In fact he truck can't do it and a long bed wouldn't change that. It's too high too short and too narrow. It also won't dump. And as for buying a seperate dump truck that would make no sense at all. It would cost more than all 3 trailers. The maintenance would cost more. And it could not do evreything I need it to do so I would need at least 1 of the trailers.

You can buy a medium duty dump truck pretty reasonably. Mine cost me $180 a year for tags and about $500 a year for insurance and can haul way more than a pickup towed dump trailer. Even a duel tandem 10 ton which is heavy, hard to get around and expensive can’t match the truck.IMG_8772.JPG

What you do not seem to get is that most people do not NEED a heavier dump truck............

I’m aware of that but not that many people have dump trailers either.

The big difference is that not many people make a living with their trucks the way that you do.

We had a dump truck and put 5k miles on it in 10 years. Just couldn't justify it. Now, I have a dump trailer. It doesnt have engine to maintain and I can hook it to my tractor and go places your truck can never go.

See, everyone has a different need and use for their equipment, what is right for me may not be right for someone else...........

If I showed a pic of my new dump trailer it would give everyone quite a laugh... 4x8 feet with a 2000 lb payload. but I can load my ATV into it, haul it to wherever I want, then unload and haul it behind the ATV.

I have a nice newer 2500 truck - easily pulls my Mini Ex and tractor, can haul the family and is even good for road trips with friends.. Have a dump trailer that costs me $23 a year to insure and will haul about 5 tons. Why would I need a dump truck to maintain, license yearly, insure, repair, etc. Most people have no need for a dump truck and when a trailer is $75 ONE time license/plate fee and next to nothing to insure it is hard to beat. Plus around here most decent trailers sell for close to new prices so the cost over the years to own is VERY low.

I agree with that. I’ve looked for a used dump trailer for a long time and haven’t found anything that’s not almost new price and ragged out. I’ll probably end up buying a new one under the impression that I can recoup most of my money if I wanted rid of it. I just gave $3,000 for a 20’ 14k equipment trailer used. I pulled a hub off before I bought it and the brakes are worn probably 75 percent out and the tires are 3/4 about 50 percent and one new one. But the best I could find on a new one was $4600 plus tax so I figured the savings was worth it. IMG_8953.JPG

Nice ramps on it too.

Nice ramps on it too.

Good ramps, good jack not one of the little dinky ones, and good adjustable height hitch were must have features. I would have liked to have drive over fenders not because I care about driving over them but they’re a lot tougher but that feature is pretty rare. One unanticipated problem is my lawnmower hangs on the straight deck. I’ve loaded the mower on my deckover trailer with a dovetail without issues. The deckover trailer is steeper though. My backhoe drags the ground coming off it and it doesn’t this trailer.

I致e got way better tie down options than a pickup ever dreamed of having. I致e got 2 rings in the very back, 4 rings where the back seats used to be and 8 studs where the middle seats used to be and my toolbox is bolted now. The cargo height isn稚 that limited. I can fit my table saw in it on the stand. I don稚 even own a 100 pound propane tank but how are you going to go about tying that down in a pickup bed standing up. Everything in a pickup bed is is wet and very exposed to theft. A pickup toolbox is close to useless. You can稚 reach anything. You can稚 even buy a new pickup a notable amount smaller than a suburban. There痴 plenty of smaller SUVs so the driving size is a moot point.

So that toolbox is bolted there all the time?

I am not trying to get into the truck/suv/dump truck argument because the contents of that toolbox would obviously disappear quickly from the back of a truck too. I am just a bit surprised what you have there hasn't resulted in lost tools plus a window to replace. We don't have any crazy crime rate, but I still don't like to leave change on the dash or tools on the floor because I feel like it is an invitation to have someone smash and dash.

I avoid parking in shady areas for starters. If I had to go I’d take my ton truck that’s tool less or ride with someone else. And the box is locked. I know anything can be defeated but it would take a lot longer than other options. The box is bolted from the bottom. Taking the whole thing would be pretty hard plus it’s too heavy to carry.

What brand of trailer is that? Looks like it might be a BNM trialer from Michigan. If so I have two of theirs, utility style. Jon

Yeah I agree it would be hard to take, I mostly meant that I would be worried about someone busting the window. Maybe it is just my low opinion of the human animal, but I feel like it would be just my luck to find the guy that is willing to smash a $300 window so he can get a $1.50 in change so I try not to leave anything where it can be seen. Of course if you need your tools to travel, you don't really have much choice. Everything is a risk and a determined thief will always find a way.

Anyway, I am calling "No Jinx" so tomorrow your window won't get smashed just because I mentioned it today.
