Guy down the road a half mile got a small dump truck. Not sure of the make or capacity. Maybe 5 ton or so. It sits all the time. Never saw it in use. I've asked if he could bring me some rock, offered to pay for the loads plus his fuel and time. He said he would. Haven't heard from him since.

My parents had a neighbor at the lake who had a dump PU and it was fairly new, but looked 75 years old from al of the abuse it took.

Just imagine how a regular bed pickup would look with the same treatment. The bed on my 1992 dump truck still looks reasonably good after routine treatment that would total a regular bed in 5 minutes. The cab isn’t perfect but it’s not bad to be 28 years old. A tiny bump on a pickup bed is thousand in damage. Anything short of bending the frame and the dump bed is good to go. I can lift the my backhoe off the ground on my tailgate. I’ve seen dozens of pickup tailgates totaled with a fraction of that abuse.

I have a short bed heavy duty diesel and will never go back to a long bed. With the longer cab it's much nicer. My dump trailer has a 10' bed and I have 2 flatbeds. One is a deckover with a 16 X 8.5 bed. The other is a tilt deck wit a 22 X 7 bed. All 3 trailers can carry more weight than the truck bed as well. The short bed works just fine for me. Each trailer has a use that they do better than the truck. In fact he truck can't do it and a long bed wouldn't change that. It's too high too short and too narrow. It also won't dump. And as for buying a seperate dump truck that would make no sense at all. It would cost more than all 3 trailers. The maintenance would cost more. And it could not do evreything I need it to do so I would need at least 1 of the trailers.

You can buy a medium duty dump truck pretty reasonably. Mine cost me $180 a year for tags and about $500 a year for insurance and can haul way more than a pickup towed dump trailer. Even a duel tandem 10 ton which is heavy, hard to get around and expensive can’t match the truck.

I’m aware of that but not that many people have dump trailers either.

The big difference is that not many people make a living with their trucks the way that you do.

We had a dump truck and put 5k miles on it in 10 years. Just couldn't justify it. Now, I have a dump trailer. It doesnt have engine to maintain and I can hook it to my tractor and go places your truck can never go.
