That accident has been discussed many times on many different sites. They were just out having a good time, nobody deserves to have that happen to them.

I see jacked up trucks with those chintzy drop hitches on the back. I don't think any one of them actually checked what they are rated for. Just if it will get low enough to pull their trailer.

Picked up one on the side of the road today, probably 12" drop, good for 400# tongue weight, 4000# trailer and it has a 2 5/16" ball on it.
Pretty sure someone hit it just before I picked it up, it was on the white line and there was someone half mile up the road who was changing their RR tire.

It would probably help but it would also involve truck modifications because it only has a pintle hitch on it currently.

Looks like Shocker makes an air ride pintle ring for the trailer side: Shocker 20K Air Pintle Ring Trailer Tongue Mount 20,000 lbs
Otherwise it looks like everything wants a 2, 2.5 or 3" receiver.

Since we are talking hitches.... I have posted this youtube video before, but it warrants posting again. Please don't use any cheap or underrated component in your hitch setup. This situation was fatal for the driver in the vehicle intended to be recovered.

I suppose hitches arent fatigue tested before approval in the USA like they are in Europe... This design simply wouldnt have made it, unless the single gusset was changed to two that were welded to the sides of the receiver tube on the neutral bend line. This gusset was a hell of a crack initiation point.
