It doesn't involve a trailer, but it's not everyday you see a vehicle crash into the 2nd story of a house ....

I picked up a Rhino Hitch. Link

I like that it does not have the Drop bar protruding below the hitch. It is about 6-8 inches longer than other hitches, but this is actually kinda nice when I am trying to launch the boat at a shallow ramp.

Have only had it a few months so I cannot comment on it with too much experience, but so for I am liking it. Swapping the balls out is very simple and easy.

Not too surprising that someone could launch into the second story of a house below the adjacent road. They must have had ridiculous speed!

That's steep rough country. That Cape Horn address would be somewhere in the lower half of this old railroad photo.

Wow - I run an 18,000+lbs rated hitch for my 12k dump and even my smallest trailer is rated at 3000lbs and I run an 8000lbs hitch (2200lbs tongue weight rated for both). I much rather have an overrated hitch than an underrated one.
I have no problem paying for a good hitch. I figure $300 -$400 is not a big deal when I may be towing a $50,000+ vehicle or even a $20K UTV.
In Europe hitches are rated with a D value and an S value: S value is vertical load, D value is calculated from the weight of the trailer and the weight of the tow vehicle.

For example, where i worked we made trailers to tow a concrete prefab slab clamp, a concrete hopper and some rigging bars behind an 80 ton crane, the usual tools a crane might need on the job.

Standard trailers just broke the towbars. Because of the huge difference between a 3.5 ton trailer and an 80 ton crane, any vibration in that 80 ton lump would be absorbed by the Vee towbar, so we ended up putting half inch gauge square tubing towbars on these trailers, just massive, because the tow bars had to absorb all the vibrations from this 80 ton mass it was attached to.

So yes, pick a hitch by the tow vehicle weight, not just the trailer weight, even if USDOT doesnt take tow vehicle weight in account like Europe does.

I’ve had concerns with the neck on my 14k trailer being pulled behind my dump truck. A pickup suspension has some give to cushion it but 750 doesn’t. That trailer has a pretty neck and so far there hasn’t been any problems.

Ford F 750 ? Model 2024 with a max GVW of 37k ? Then the truck weighs 2.5 times the 14k trailer.

The crane of 80 ton weighs 22 times the 3.5 ton tool trailer.

It doesn’t really matter how much the truck weighs compared to the trailer. It’s the same principle. The 750 has practically no suspension at all and shocks the neck a lot more than what a pickup would.

Time for a air suspension gooseneck coupler?

Since we are talking hitches.... I have posted this youtube video before, but it warrants posting again. Please don't use any cheap or underrated component in your hitch setup. This situation was fatal for the driver in the vehicle intended to be recovered.
