I've got a buddy who hauls his 10K lb New Holland C232 on a dump trailer, he had never even considered chaining it.

If he shuts the rear gate, at least it’s somewhat contained.

There are circumstances that don't require a load to be "secured" to the point that it can shaken upside down without coming loose.

How do you protect from an airplane falling out of the sky on the tow vehicle?

A good driver takes speed, weather, road conditions, traffic, & MANY other things into consideration when transporting anything.

You left out the most hazardous consideration. Other drivers.

There may be circumstances where you don't secure a load, like on your own private property, or hauling bags of landscape materials in a dump trailer, etc. But there is absolutely no excuse for not securing a piece of equipment when driving on a public road. As many have mentioned, you can't plan for the unexpected, and therein lies the problem. And the airplane scenario...I think you are saying that life has risks and we can't avoid all of them. I agree with that, but let's mitigate the risks that are in our control.
