Today having 1922 clay sewer laterals replaced with heat welded 4” plastic…

The clay needed annual root clearing so the idea is to replace and be good for another 100 years.

The contractor uses only Kubota b26 tlb and had two on todays job.

Contractor rigs either have Honda or Predator gensets and likes the Harbor Freight Predator and the 3500 Watt Inverter is super quiet.

Looks like they are using schedule 40, is that code there? I bet it's some $$$$$$$ to replace.

18k for all 3 including permits.

City permits nearly doubled this year and $2,400 of the 18k is for permits.

It would have been nearly double if street excavation required.

I’m piggy backing on the sewer main the district replaced as they ran a clean out to curb… so it could be worse.

Also getting together to do 3 at one time gave a little price break.

That's a bonus that they installed a curb cleanout.

If it had been to a center of the road manhole, I would have suggest pipe bursting. But no need since it had the curb clean out. $2400 for "maintenance of existing" is highway robbery, but if it makes it feel better, you would be hard pressed to do 3 septic tanks for that price

Still did pipe bursting from curb under sidewalk and driveways… the old clay just gave way as the new pipe pulled.

Everything here dates from 1922 including the utility poles…

The utility started upgrading because these 3 bedroom homes were set up with 30 amp 120v mains and that doesn’t work with the all electric house and car vision

City Inspector pleased with one correction and will accept a picture…

Now waiting for the Sewer District Inspection which is 100% separate and in part why the permit fees are so high…

City pipes carry the sewage to treatment plant which is sewer district and regional.

I had to do this at a rental house in Merced a few years back. City said I was responsible all the way to the main in the middle of the street. Permits, traffic control, etc. What a mess.

Traffic control runs around $1500 per day for a simple lane closure on a state road...

Nothing like 60+ homes on a city block individually digging up a newly paved once in 60 years blacktop.

Sewer District much harder than city which surprised the heck out of me.

Sewer District demanded line test to the sewer main which was beyond todays scope.

Contractor said ok but he did not install anything under city street…

All 3 passed and if I have to pay extra I’m ok with that because at the end of the day it’s about getting the job done…

Maybe buying lunch for the whole crew today paid off?

Root infiltration, WHAT A PAIN!! I had old clay sewer pipes that had roots getting in them yearly like you. Took out LARGE privet bush and it solved it. Installed PVC at the end of my reno, hand forced by city. They make you upgrade your sewer to the street if you do a reno greater than some certain dollar amount, I think $10,000. It needed it anyways, the fiber guys hit it years ago and did a crappy job fixing it and it settled creating a belly. Hopefully I will never have to worry again.
