Server Problems Resolved

As an additional note I get the following message at the homepage. I can get past it by typing in the address line into the forums page.

Hi Everyone,

Well first: That downtime just like 3 seconds ago was me. I had to shut off mysql and apache so I could fix CBN. Then Mysql was choking when I tried to bring it back up so it took me longer than the original estimated 30 seconds. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Secondly: If any of you get Test Pages anywhere, that's PROBABLY just a cache issure. Refresh! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Other than that, things seem to be ok.

Yep, I hit the downtime, figured it was something like that (knowing that you guys are still working your butts off), went away and came back a couple of minutes later, and everything was fine again.

Of course, I was hit by a momentary jolt of paranoia, since after I re-registered the first time it went down again, and after registering the second time this morning, sure enough, down again! I started thinking I was a jinx...it was very good to see it back up again a couple of minutes later. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Were the drives either RAID 1 or RAID 5?

No, we don't run RAID, but that would have probably helped prevent any downtime. I'm not positive if our current server supports RAID or not, but anything can be done for the right amount of money. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That was a perfect picture of what we see from our back patio. Except, we are about a mile closer... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I am always humbled and awestruck at Nature. I have seen floods --growing up in the Midwest, we had some dillies on the Illinois River. But this is the first time I have been "up close and personal" with a forest fire. Just wanted to mention that quite a few years ago, we lived in Tucson for about a year while my Dad oversaw the construction of the Tucson National Golf Club. We rented a house that had Mt. Lemmon as our view from the back yard. It was great. Being "snowbirds", we frequently drove up to the mountain during the winter just to see snow and go skiing.

I pray for you and everyone out there to be safe, and hope that the damage to those beautiful mountains is minimal.

Thanks for your concern. Mt. Lemmon is a most remarkable place, since it only an hour from a true desert. In Jan and Feb, one can truly have the best of all worlds -- snow skiiing + world class golf + swimming by the pool -- all in the same day!

Despite all of the fire damage, I am sure the mountain and all of Tucson environs will recover quickly and remain a place of extraordinary beauty.

We used to be an "official guzzling station" for Green Mountain coffee. It fact it was for a while designated as the "official coffee" of TBN. But since we left NY, we haven't found a place to buy it out here.

It really is. We were only there for the one month (January '90), staying at The Voyager RV Resort (which I understand has changed considerably since then), enjoying shirt sleeve weather there and then run up the mountain to watch the skiers (have no desire to try that myself, but fun to watch /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif).

And I never got particularly interested in shuffleboard, before or after visiting The Voyager, but while there, we had a great time playing that game. I've never seen shuffleboard courts or equipment to match what they had. Someone told us they hold state championship matches there, and I can't imagine any better courts for the game.

Truly sad about the doins on here...........seems that the puter world is just like this.......but what I have found is that when I rebuild it is usually better than what I had before because I dont have to learn from new but just rebuild and maybe even learn something new while I am constructing..............

I'm not sure of what business model that you are using for TBN, but can you guys accept donations/optional fees to aid you in combating rising costs. I use TBN almost nightly, and it is for free. That's a great deal, but it won't be if TBN were to fold due to costs. May I suggest placing a banner on the main discussion page suggesting an optional fee? I definetly would contribute.

P.S. I would pay double whatever a recommended fee if you guys could figure out how to integrate a spell checker. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi BigDave,

Thanks for your sentiments. Actually, the financial "model" for TBN never has been, and almost certainly never could or will be a fee or membership site. That model just does not work on the Web for any type of enthusiast site, like our compact tractor related group has created.

We do have several interesting opportunities that we have been developing over the past six months, which could add significant revenue.

TBN started almost accidentally, and just grew and grew (and keeps on growing!). We pretty much consider it a kind of experimental playpen, for us to try out all kinds of interesting things.

Besides TBN (and CBN), we own and operate a number of other sites. And we have various consulting clients who are always impressed with just everyhting about our operation of TBN --- which helps us get so-called "paying clients."

That said, we (the IMC staff that oversees TBN) --as much as all the TBN family--are more or less "addicted" to whatever it is that goes on here.

Yes, it is about our love of CTs and our various tractor experiences. But I think there is a larger and more significant social aspect. Maybe with the change in demographics and geogrpahics -- kids moving away from parents, divorce, etc etc etc. --- which all contribute to making these kinds of "new" Internet social groups important.

Besides TBN, there are a number of other great sites with people who on the surface share an interest in, say, a type of car or truck, but beyond that, develop true friendships. I know my own knowledge and overall life experience has been greatly enriched by my interactions here over the past few years.

But in the end, we really consider that the TBN community is who actually "owns" the site. We techno-types are shepards all right, but the bulk of the credit goes to you, the membership. I am certain that there is none to compare with it on the Web, nor in the whole wide world.

I agree with Bob, excellent synopsis. Be sure that I (and I'm sure all the members here) certainly appreciate the time, effort and funds you and the rest put in to keep this site running. We all realize what an undertaking it must be to keep a community such as this operating smoothly and we appreciate it greatly.

There was a thread a while back that many members commented on how they first found TBN. Some also recalled the very early days of "Kubotasource.com" (no longer around) which was the predecessor to TBN. Actually there was even a "true beginning" before that, and I think there may be four or five members still around.

Maybe we could convince some "helpers" to write an "Official History" of TBN?

While it is unfortunate that reality encroaches on our wishes, especially when it can interfer with a holiday, nevertheless it is somehow appropriate on the holiday we celebrate our great nation and its traditions that we see a demonstration of what makes America great, folks out there doing the right thing, going the extra mile, not because it is easy, not for great monetary reward or public recognition, but because they are part of the great CAN DO tradition, a small segment of the warf and woof of the fabric that is AMERICA.

I'm proud of and respect the personal quallities exemplified by the kind of self motivation and selfless devotion to a job well done as demonstrated by the "keepers" of the great TBN and CBN.

I wish you continued success in your endeavors.

P.S. For those who might have wondered what BZ means... In the US Navy and Coast Guard when a unit brings great credit on itself for actions above and beyond the call of duty they might receive a congratulatory message over some com link or by semaphore "B" "Z" Bravo Zulu. It usually doesn't get much better than that!
