Last year we converted from a septic tank/field to a lagoon. Our waste line now bypasses the septic tank. The tank was pumped out before it was disconnected. So now we have a 500 gal tank buried in our back yard. It is about half-way between the house, barn, and our garden.

My wife and kids think this is disgusting, but I was wondering if there is any way to use the septic tank as a rainwater storage tank for irrigating the garden in the hot dry summer? Is it possible to clean out a tank well enough that it is feasible? If it could be cleaned - run some rainwater collection lines from the buildings to it. Then have a water pump and soaker hoses for garden irrigation.

Or would it be cheaper to just buy a 500gal plastic tank and bury it and do the same thing?

Anyone ever do anything else with an old septic tank?

Yep crush it and fill the hole in...you would not want to take a chance on human sewage in even the smallest risidual amount getting into your vegetabel garden or even on the surface of your lawn...think disease...
