How many of you, given 1 round point shovel and clay soil, could dig a 100 meter 1 foot deep trench and bury the cable in an afternoon?

Where I grew up, I could have. Where I live now, it would talk about 3-4 days with all the little rocks.

NorTrac, sounds like you want about the same thing as me. Just be able to view, at your leisure, wha's happening at ye place. Anytime, anywhere. And for me, I also want speakers so I can see, listen and talk to anybody at me place when I'm away. This is helpful when termite man, etc. comes when I'm not home, which he usually does. I could also tell a thug to get the heck out before I shoot him! Remotely.

There is a canned security system that does exactly what you're looking for. I remember it was on Shark Tank. It's called DoorBot. I need to deal with the steel siding which is my biggest problem.

I know about that doorbot thingamajig, but I need to be able to have it work apart from the doorbell. I want to see people/crits before they get to door.

If you just want to see one location, you might find something from your cell phone company. I know that my neighbors have a camera set up in their sap house in springtime, I don't know about the cost though.

For just monitoring, the Nest camera works well -- I bought one to keep an eye on our home when we're away. They are pricey ($200 each) but super easy to setup. Far easier than a network camera I had about 5 years ago, which required some pretty detailed configuration of my wifi router. I have one Nest watching our first floor living area from a loft, and am thinking about another to watch the driveway/yard from a 2nd floor window.

I've heard they don't work going between different transformers. I've a transformer for the house and a separate one for the shops.

That is true, if your barn is fed from another transformer it won't work. Other than that, I found them to work great. My IP barn camera and network to reach it is running on an extension cord.

I have these Wi-Fi Cameras | D-Link, and they work well for me. I put one on the house porch (under roof) that acts as a WiFi repeater and then the one in the barn is able to connect through that one. I get email alerts of any activity. The cloud service and app for phone is free.

Will a DVD writer work at zero degrees Fahrenheit? I'd be surprised but I'd like to know.

is the average barn thief going to be hauling around sniffers and stingray style equipment? If so.. I'd be more worried about other things than what's in my barn... ;)

AMEN!!! Meth heads looking to score quick carry-out items, and even tractor thieves, are not going to spend time trying to jam WIFI.

Excuse me all to crap, I guess that there is such a thing as a dumb question. Remind me never to ask anything again.
I sit here reading about all of the problems with having working WiFi... even if I can't access your system my phone will tell me that it's there. If you have something which I want, it doesn't seem that difficult to block the signal from the barn to the router... but I guess that's something which everyone except me already knew isn't possible.

Then again, I wasn't aware that only crackheds are thief's... something else which apparently everyone already knew.
