I'm more concerned about getting a system that will work. It appears clear that I could get a system that would be <$800. It's more for monitoring and not security reasons, so I'm fine with having the DVR out in the barn. I guess I'm getting old and not up with technology like I used to. I have wireless internet set up in the house. The signal does not go more than a few feet into the barn. That is why I was looking at a range extender. Someone else mentioned a directional antenna to me. I will look into that also. I also need to look into a "IP" camera.
If I set up a router to the DVR in the barn, I likely will still have signal issues in the house. I think I need an antenna on the outside of the barn. If anyone has specific brand recommendations or site recommendations they would be appreciated. I also thought that if I had the DVR in the house, maybe I'd put a wired camera on the house hooked to it.
My BIL has his Doctors office 150 yards from his house, across several neighbors lots, with 1 tree partially blocking the way. He HAS to have high speed internet for the office and wnated to share it with his house. In 2012 he bought a wireless range extender like
Ubiquiti UAP-Outdoor+, UniFi AP Outdoor+ 2.4GHz PoE 802.11n 300Mbps up 600 ft - Newegg.com. It's only been working flawlessly for 3 years. He's got two antennas, one outside the office one outside the house. The prime problem with wireless is signal blocking by structures and vegetation. I've two rows of trees to cut down before I can get a shot to my shops.

I have been in this business for twenty five years. This would be the kind of call I dread. Too many issues with wireless. It may work today but not tomorrow. Who pays for the service calls?
But most of all, I don't understand why the common thinking that having cameras constitute security. I want to prevent crime, not have images of crime being committed. Our police and justice system have no interest or time in prosecuting property crimes.

no need to hijack the thread.
/edit - This thread got me surfing over to Small net.
Here is a quote from what I would consider a doofus:
Agreed with the above. That said, 100m of direct bury cat5e isn't all that expensive and its probably only an afternoon of your time to bury it a foot down.
He's written similar things in other threads.
NO mention of equipment needed.
It's a network forum, not a trencher or tractor forum.
How many of you, given 1 round point shovel and clay soil, could dig a 100 meter 1 foot deep trench and bury the cable in an afternoon?
