Security Camera Confusion

Excuse me all to crap, I guess that there is such a thing as a dumb question. Remind me never to ask anything again.
I sit here reading about all of the problems with having working WiFi... even if I can't access your system my phone will tell me that it's there. If you have something which I want, it doesn't seem that difficult to block the signal from the barn to the router... but I guess that's something which everyone except me already knew isn't possible.

Then again, I wasn't aware that only crackheds are thief's... something else which apparently everyone already knew.

Whoa! I'm not intending to insult anyone. Sorry if it came across that way. Sometimes things don't come across in writing as they would in a face-to-face conversation. ;)

As I mentioned before, if at all possible, run an internet wire from the house to the barn. Its the surest way to guarantee a signal. Then put the camera system in the barn. Access it from the house as you desire. Have it send activity photos to a gmail account that will show up on your cell phone when you're not around. That also guarantees that the photos will be in the cloud for safe keeping if the recording system is stolen. WIFI can work well, but you'll have some cost in equipment on each end for dependable WIFI.

But in all reality, I highly, highly doubt that anyone will ever attempt to jam WIFI in a home burglary attempt. Criminals are criminals because they are not smart and/or they are desperate. They're brains are not wired correctly. And if they did have the smarts to do it, they'd be going after bigger fish than our homes.... like the Dollar Store!

your phone, without some mods or external gear, or a special app, won't tell you if I have wifi, if I don't broadcast their name or SSID... IE.. hidden wifi.

now, if you know that info you could manually enter it and try to connect.. but otherwise just using your phones built in 'map wifi' or show wifi networks.. you won't see it.

Keep in mind, some video systems use an encrypted special wifi network. At work we have video tranceivers that setup their own pocket non internet connected wifi network for sending audio and video.. there are multiple frequency ranges they can use, and they automatically avoid 'regular' computer wifi frequency ranges to avoid interference.

If a thief has the gear and knowledge to jamb cellphone and wifi.. i'm betting he's not looking for my 1955 farm tractor and bags of feed in my barn... ;)

Thanks for the input. I believe that the Ethernet through the power may work for me. If I'm understanding some things correctly, I can plug a unit into an outlet in the barn that can be connected with an Ethernet cable to 2 cameras (possibly need a router depending on cameras) Then I can plug another unit in the house and connect it to my router. Can I then use a DVR? Clearly some details/investigations left to understand.

But most of all, I don't understand why the common thinking that having cameras constitute security. I want to prevent crime, not have images of crime being committed. Our police and justice system have no interest or time in prosecuting property crimes.

There is tremendous evidence that security cameras discourage thieves, especially the petty opportunists that are most likely to steal or vandalize rural property. The guy that thinks out and plans his crime well enough to circumvent basic security systems isn't stealing spare tires and toolboxes out of barns.

With ip cameras use a poe switch in the barn if more than one camera as it will also provide the camera power needed.

All you will need is a SWITCH not a ROUTER.

The level of sophistication is usually dependent on the value of the items. "blocking the signal" could be done by putting a piece of metal roofing in the path. But with the advent of the 20V cordless sawzall most buildings that are not concrete are easy to get into. Lot easier than using a 50 cal.

You are  at what the criminals DON'T KNOW. But you don't know they don't know. They do not always have the "smarts" to find the bigger fish. If they trash my shops and steal my (what I consider) easily transported valuables they get off with a welder and maybe a chainsaw. But my shops are still trashed.

Wifi sniffer apps are easy.

But the thread boils down to the OP wants to watch his barn for entertainment. Security is best configured starting with a guard with a high powered rifle.
Or a Mississippi granny with a shotgun.

If you have power in the barn, run internet to the barn from the house and put the entire 4-8 camera system in the barn. It will simplify things greatly. Only one wire to run to the house (or you could go wireless internet to the house. 100' is not that far with directional antennas, but wired is always on with no interruptions). Then have they system send pictures/videos over the internet to a gmail account. Also, you can log into the barn system from a computer in the house to check up on things from the house.
What he said. With POI (Power Over Internet) camera systems it's easy to set up.

I'm kinda doubting the techo spy thief wants my 70 year old tractor or bags of feed. or yours either.. :)

I'm envisioning this mission impossible team zip lining in, then using sprays to look for lasers trip lines, using doppler laser microphones aimed at windows, 4 pt harnes rigs to lower into my barn, grab a bag of layer pellets, then high tail it to the back of the pasture where a black helicopter dusts off picking up their delta force chicken feed liberation team. ;)

I can see in my barn from my house, on my computer or on my phone. There are no lights on in the barn. Using ethernet over power with an IP camera, running across a 100' extension cord. NVR is in the house.
